  • At witts end/QT ?mark when loading my web video where esle to go!?!

Posted by Dean Mikulla on August 8, 2009 at 5:00 pm

Kind of a repost from last week, still perplexed!
I have a simple web page with my short movies in QT format, I use the “export for web” feature to embed them .
They work great and I’ve tested them on several different PCs,Macs, and laptops ,but , I have one or two friends who say they just get the question mark when they try to watch my latest vid.
One PC user , who was using QT 5, updated to QT 7 and it fixed the problem. Now My latest video is doing the QT question mark thing on my Macbook Pro! It’s worked since I put it up on my web page, then today it stopped, just getting question mark. I’m using Firefox 3.0.13. However , when I try opening using the Safari 3.2.3 that came with my MBP, it works! Then when I go back to Firefox, its working there !?! Tried my PC at work that was working yesterday, today..the ?MARK!?
I’ve searched and read many forum posts here and elsewhere and some say trash QT preferences(did that), reload Flash 9 (what does that have to do with QT?). Maybe it has something to do with my html code? I’m finding that this must be a complicated issue ,because know will touch it.
Any ideas would at least make me feel better, thanks

Here’s the web page in question,

    Dean,

it doesn’t look like anything is wrong with your code. I’m running Safari 4.0.2 and everything comes up fine. Your movie, however, does look pretty large and takes a minute to load. That said, the internet connection speed has a lot to do with whether the quicktime will show up or not. If the connection is too slow, it will time out and the QT will appear as a ?-mark. I have the same thing happen with my own website, so the error isn’t uncommon. You mentioned that you tried on Firefox, didn’t work, then tried Safari and it did. When you went back to Firefox and it works, that’s not uncommon. The connection refreshed the browser page and managed to recognize the file without timing out. I wouldn’t worry about the way you’re code is working — it is. It’s the connection speed that matters. If it is a monster problem, you might find a way to decrease the file size so that spotty connections can access the file more easily.

    Hallelujah Josh!
I’m at work , and the connection is slow, that must be it. in the last two hours, I’ve had three friends with PCs update their QT and now they have no problems with my new , longer movie. I had made fun of them for being PC users in the process while trouble shooting with them ! Mean while I started with the ?mark!!
Any way thanks, I’ll look at downsizing the movie,

The parameter that affects load time is data rate. High data rate = long load time. Using the same data rate with a smaller frame size won’t change load time a bit. But, as you lower the data rate, the visual quality will be lowered. So, you need to find a balance between frame size and quality for a given data rate. You might find more info about this on the Compression Techniques forum. https://forums.creativecow.net/compressiontechniques

    Thank you John and Josh.
Of course I need just a little more info. I did go and read some in the compression forum and will continue to do so.
My work flow is, make my movie in FCP, export QT movie not self contained. Then, in QT pro, export for web so I have all my html ( which i’m not good at!). Where do i set the data rate?
Or should I export from FCP using QT conversion, and I assume I can limit mt my data rate there in the “settings” option under “limit Data rate” and trying different “compression slider” positions? But when I “export for web” in QTpro , wont that covert it again, reducing quality?

    Thanks , Dean

I’m not familiar with the internal workings of QT Pro (and not in front of my edit computer to check), but see if there’s an option button. If so, data rate is probably there. You can use Compressor to make your final file (probably an h.264 file) and have much more control. The Inspector Window allows you to change preset settings if you want (or need to). Just click through the various tabs, although, most of what you want to do is in the Encoder tab.

You can restrict the data rate in QT Pro exports under the settings feature. I’m with John that Compressor is the better way to go and gives a lot more control–and as he mentions h264 is probably the best codec for what you’re looking for. If you go to flash use f4v which has a bit higher data rate than regular flv and retains better quality. (I’ve found that Flash loads much more quickly than QT.) However if you decide on this route, you’ll have to change up your html code to recognize the flash. Not sure if you want to do that.

    Best of luck Dean.

Josh, John, thanks for the replies,
Up to this point in my hobbiest learnings , I’ve went with QT pro to encode and create the html to put my vids on the web. The “export for web” feature makes it easy to create the code and the “pointer file” that makes iPhone, and desktop viewing possible.
But as I step up my videos, I see I need to become more familiar with compressor, and html to do the things i want, which is put my movies on the web, without using Youtube, vimeo, etc.
    Thanks Again!
