creating audio-only master clips to export for mix
Hello folks, this is my first desperate plea for help here. I’m doing a festival-application finish of a doc feature and will be doing sound post in Soundtrack Pro. I want to break the film up into reels, consolidate the media and export only the audio with three-second handles and a rendered low-res QT video to mix to. The film was shot on DVCPRO HD 720p24fps. I’ve experimented with unlinking, making clips independent, creating new master clips, copying and recompressing in the Media Manager, but I always end up with media files that contain video. For mixing purposes this is unnecessary, eats up space and I get messages in STP that my disk is too slow (even running off an esata drive). If I make a custom export setting to minimize the data-rate of the video, it takes forever to recompress. In my good-old-Avid days, I used to duplicate a sequence, delete all the video, and then “Consolidate”. Any ideas on how to achieve the same effect?

Why not just use the “Send to Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project” inside FCP to send your reels to ST Pro? You can easily round trip back to FCP. https://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/soundtrackpro/flexible-workflows.html

An audio only export is pretty simple Eben, especially if you read the the manual or search using the help function. Didn’t your Avid training teach manual reading?
Export>>QT Conversion – change the format to AIFF.

Why not just use the “Send to Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project” inside FCP to send your reels to ST Pro? You can easily round trip back to FCP. https://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/soundtrackpro/flexible-workflows.html
That’s the idea, but this assumes that I’m mixing on the same system where the media is located, and still doesn’t solve the problem – Soundtrack Pro is accessing the audio data embedded in the DVCPRO HD files (@118 mbits/sec) instead of consolidated audio-only files (@2.3 mbits/sec). I’m mixing in another studio which is why I want to consolidate media to a separate drive and then send to STP Multitrack Project so it references those files. I know I can export OMF and import into STP, but there are several disadvantages to that method (has trouble with long file names, splits stereo tracks, etc.)
As a workaround, I may try to create an Automator script that batch deletes the video tracks from all the DVCPRO HD files.
David, exporting to AIFF creates a stereo file – how am I supposed to mix that?

That process happens in one step when you export an OMF from the FCP timeline. The good old AVID method was a whole heap of extra work that is now redundant.

No mono tracks, discrete tracks, or any other qualifiers were mentioned anywhere in your initial question. You said you were unable to export audio without video as I recall. Answers here are typically only as good as the questions posed. If you are more precise I assure you, your question can be answered.
BTW, exporting to AIFF can be stereo or mono.
