  • a question about exporting from FCP for highest quality

Hello, my step daughter is in film school in the Philippines (IAFT in Cebu). She just completed her first short film, and as she is still in the Philippines, I am suppose to send the DVDs out to festivals for her. What I think I need is one DVD from her in the highest quality to use to run off DVDs to send out to the festivals. She is using “out of the box” to enter most of these festivals through an online process.

I was wondering what file I need to get from her to make quality reproductions, and what software I should use to make the DVDs from it. I have iDVD 09, but I will get whatever software that will make the highest quality copies to submit to these festivals.

I apologize if this is an infantile question for most of you. This is her first time, and she has learned how to film and edit with FCS, but she is not sure what would be the best file to give me. She thinks it would be a QT file, but as it costs $50 to DHL it, I want to make sure we get it right.

Thank you so much for your time considering the questions I posed.

IMHO the best approach would be for her to burn a dvd which she can check for quality and send that to you to be copied. If she sends you a QT file the you’ll have to encode the mv2 and ac3 files from that, then create the dvd. While that’s not hard to do, she won’t be able to view it to make sure it properly represents her work.

    Thank you John,

So she should burn an NTSC DV format DVD 480p if I understand correctly. Then I simply take this disc and copy it to send to the festivals she enters.

    I truly appreciate the response.

She should make the DVD from whatever format she’s edited with. From her timeline she’d export either a ref or self-contained QT movie using Current Settings. Then in Compressor, using that QT, she encodes an mv2 and ac3 file to make the DVD. DVDs aren’t DV or any edit codec, they’re made with mv2 & ac3 (or aiff) files, which are made from whatever edit codec is used. The final step is using the mv2 and ac3 files in DVD Studio Pro to make the DVD.
