Fixing a blown out background
Posted by Justin Mitchell on August 7, 2009 at 8:16 pmI’m busy editing a video and in one of the interviews the background is very washed out. It was shot outside in front of a lake and the lake appears almost white, the sky is completely white and the trees are quite faded as well. The subject looks fine though. I was wondering if anybody had a good technique to fix this.
Thanks,

August 7, 2009 at 8:41 pmWell, not much you can do…the information is lost in that blown out area. But there are plugins that can pull out what detail is there:

The LOOKS SWEET package has Mr. Fixit, and that is great for pulling out what detail there is in those bright spots. I use this myself.
There is also the Capt’s Blowout Fixer…that is free. Not as good, but worth trying too, no?

August 7, 2009 at 8:42 pmUnfortunately, you’re in a bit of a pickle. The white information is likely clipped, meaning that there’s no more detail there. If you pull it down with color correction, it doesn’t allow for any more detail and it just turns shades of grey instead of white.
Option 1: Reshoot
Option 2: Rotoscope person and put in a new background
Option 3: Settle for some sort of look to minimize the clipping in color correction
Play around with it and post some stills if you want. Helps to see what you’re actually talking about.

August 8, 2009 at 3:29 amanother useful “blowout fixer” is a freebie from Lyric:
<https://www.lyric.com/fcp-plugins/>you may also want to mask of the sky, lake and any land,
and give them separate colour washes / grades.nick

August 8, 2009 at 8:03 pmYou could use Color affect the sky and lake.

You forgot option 4: String up your shooter by his thumbs! OK … that won’t fix the video, but it may make you feel better! 😉
