    2) Most of our footage is 23.98, and we capture everything with overlapping handles. So if a clip is overlapping a 23.98 clip on the head, does this affect the conversion, even if the clip successfully captured at 59.94?”

I have heard that this can be an issue with DVCProHD. I’ve run into a situation where having colour bars captured as part of the clip will prevent the Frame rate convertor from working properly.

Our camera folks change tapes when shooting offspeed, that way we know which material has been shot that way and needs to be processed.

They are both the same in terms of quality. Edit to tape will control your deck however, which you’ll need to do to get frame accurate output to tape. Print to video is just like doing a crash record, you can’t control the deck with it.

Black Magic cards neeed to see incoming video as well as the audio. Connect a deck or other video source to the video input and try it again.

Check the condition lights on the Digibeta when playing back. Are they red? If so, you’ve got a reference problem in recording. Make sure you have the out ref switch on teh Dbeta set to input video OR disconnect the output from the Dbeta to the blackmagic card while recording.

  • Hi Mark

I’ve seen this for quite a while. Don’t know if it’s just related to Blackmagic or not. I have both Kona and Blackmagic cards at work, but I’m not at work today, so I can’t check the Kona. I seem to recall that I used to see this problem on my old Cinewave system, so I think this bug has been around awhile. My solution as well was to turn off range check. I used to colour correct with external scopes and then add a broadcast safe filter for good measure (I say used to, because I have recently switched to Final Touch for colour correction)

Interesting thoughts. My reasons for choosing the Convergent box was because of my workflow. I work with the DVCPro HD codec, so I didn’t want to be adding compression noise to analog noise.

One of my systems has a Blackmagic Extreme with component analog in. I’ll try and run some tests to see if there is a noticeable difference by the time it all ends up as DVC Pro HD.

And Bob, I couldn’t agree more on the audio side of things.

    Cheers guys.

Not to put down the AJA box, I love their stuff, but you’re adding some analog noise by outputting from the HDV deck component outputs.

Both Convergent Design and Miranda make boxes that convert from firewire to HD-SDI without resorting to analog. I’ve been using the Convergent box for a while and it does a great job.

    Hi Martin

I’m guessing you’re running Xsan 1.3. It was a bad release, causing all sorts of render problems, strangely the render problems only seem to affect FCp and photoshop. Xsan 1.4 seems to have solved the problems.

Check out the discussions on Xsanity.com. There’s also an Xsan forum here on the Cow with some info on Xsan 1.4
