Once again, Blackmagic is at the top of it’s game. The ATEM Mini Pro looks amazing.

But have a look at Grant’s left shoulder (camera right). It looks like there’s some odd jumping of his shirt going on. It made me wonder if there was something in the background that they realized they need to get rid of after the vide was short. Thoughts?

  • I teach editing and post-production at Capilano University in Vancouver. We focus entirely on Avid as it’s the one being used mostly by the film and TV business here in Vancouver. We do have Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve on some of the systems available to 3rd and 4th year students.

We tell our students that Avid is the hardest to learn, but once you’ve gotten comfortable with it, learning any other track-based system is easy.

The similarities between Avid, Resolve and Premiere make it easy for students to switch between them. But FCPX doesn’t really look or feel like any other NLE, except iMovie.

Before my time, Capilano U used to teach FCP7, when Apple EOL’d FCP 7, the university switched to Avid.

    Thanks David

But no, they’re all standalone QT files. I’ve been burned over the years many times with QT REF files and I avoid them like the plague ☺

    Cheers

Just curious why you would use a RS232 adapter. The JH3 has a 422 port doesn’t it? (Been a while since I worked with one)

Also, not all 422 cables have all the pins active. You might want to check the pinouts with a continuity meter.

    From the interweb:

    Sony 422 Machine Control Pinout
    The connectors are 9-pin D (D9).
The cable is always male on both ends (D9-M).
D9C-M is male crimp and D9S-M is male solder.

Store-bought cables are usually wired straight through, pin for pin with all
the pins connected, but there are only four pins that must
go through for the cable to work; 2, 3, 7, and 8.

These are the pin names that Sony uses on its play machines.

    1. Frame Ground
    2. Transmit A
    3. Receive B
    4. Receive Common
    5. Spare
    6. Transmit Common
    7. Transmit B
    8. Receive A
    9. Frame Ground

We’ve seen similar performance issues when doing the same thing. It “shouldn’t” be a problem, but FCP doesn’t seem to be happy when you do this.

I don’t have any solutions. We only did this with one project because of a time crunch.

Brilliant, drop the mike, leave the stage.

    Hi Neel

All I did was install and open Final Cut 7 and load up a clip. The original link was mine. I wouldn’t put any trust in FCP 7 and Yosemite. I was just curious to see if it would work, I don’t plan on doing anymore testing.

    Cheers

Dave, I’m glad someone got the VisiCalc reference 🙂
