No Communication !!
Folks,
Before I had to leave town for a week, I have been working with Kona support on this and have not heard back from them today. I need to solve this ASAP, please.I am using an older MacPro-
Mac OS version is OS X Lion 10.7.5 with 2×2.66 Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon
5 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM & NVidia GeoForce 7300 GT 256MBMy Deck is the Sony J-H3, tried and true. Since bring it back from Austin, Texas, I’ve had some strange issues. But I think all cables and settings are correct with the deck.
the HD-SDI goes into the Kona 3 breakout box and the RS-422 cable too from the remote port in the deck to the proper port on the box.
there has been a very nice full color image of what ever is playing on the deck. And in the Log & Capture window… no time code and in the bottom center – NO COMMUNICATION.I have the Kona Control panel open and under the time code tab in the Input box. next to the RP188 LTC tab- I can see red or blue time code depending on whether the deck in playing or not.
Ive trashed preferences and reset everything I can think of.. In audio/video settings I’ve played with Deck settings etc. But cannot figure out what is wrong. I know it must be a setting within FCP 7.0.3 because the time code is in the machine…. Right?

Maybe try a different RS-422 cable? I had this issue at one point too, and a new cable did it.

The newest cable is doing the best job. I have 3 here now. After I installed it, the Time Code appeared in the AJA Control Panel. So we are making progress… slowly.
My question is since the control panel sees the TC and the Log & Capture window are showing the video, then.. ? Why no communication?

Signal is one thing, communication is another. The video signal is fine, so your SDI connection is solid. The connection is deck communication, and that is specifically the RS-422 connection.

Wondering if it might not be something on the end of the deck, or the AJA Box. YOu did say the deck was acting up.

I went through about 7 hours of looking at every software option, clearing Pram etc. After another hour with Steve of Aja Support, we can only conclude that it tis the cable. I’ve bought 2 new ones with new 422/232 adapters. If this does not work, then I’m back to square one. I’ll keep this forum posted on the progress.

Yeah…whenever I had this issue it was always the cable. Brittle things.

Just curious why you would use a RS232 adapter. The JH3 has a 422 port doesn’t it? (Been a while since I worked with one)
Also, not all 422 cables have all the pins active. You might want to check the pinouts with a continuity meter.

The cable is always male on both ends (D9-M).

Thank you for your detailed response.
The J-H3 does have a remote input with 9 pin above a
RS232c connector at the bottom lower right as you face the rear of the deck.
I’ve had suggestions from LTC/VITC and having gone through every software panel option, I think we are left with the cable being the final option .
If this does not work… I will let everyone else know…

That deck DOES have an RS-422 jack. It’s the one labeled “Remote” right above the RS-232 port. Use this connector with the Kona card and not the RS-232 port. It should be pretty much plug and play unless the menu settings on the deck were changed.
