AJA HD10AVA
Posted by Walter Biscardi on August 22, 2006 at 8:03 pmThe units are shipping!!! I just got a nice surprise in my mail today. This little guy is sweet. Same great Component HD to HD-SDI conversion but with the added benefit of analog audio now embedded in the SDI signal.
Sweeeeeeet! We purchased this unit to take the Component and Analog audio feeds out of our Sony HDV deck so we can capture / edit a new series in DVCPro HD. Way to go guys, this little guy is going to work out perfectly!

what are you using for VTR control – are you using Firewire, or are you using the
Addenda RS-4/L, which has a protocol listed in FCP ?Bob Zelin

Firewire. I like to keep things simple.

August 23, 2006 at 12:06 amso when you use Firewire for VTR control of the HVRM – should I assume that you are disconnecting your AJA I/O LA from this system ?

The Io is only connected to a system when it is needed. It’s not kept connected and running at all times because we only use it on occasion. I mainly keep it hardwired to our BetaSP machine for layoffs for NBC News stories and some corporate jobs that require a Beta master.

August 23, 2006 at 5:24 pmNot to put down the AJA box, I love their stuff, but you’re adding some analog noise by outputting from the HDV deck component outputs.
Both Convergent Design and Miranda make boxes that convert from firewire to HD-SDI without resorting to analog. I’ve been using the Convergent box for a while and it does a great job.
Cheers

August 23, 2006 at 6:01 pmIt all comes down to budget, John.
Those of us who have tight budgets, get AJA boxes. Those who don’t, can get more.

Perhaps in your case, but not in my case with this product. I go with a company that has equipment I trust, and that’s AJA. I do not have any desire for Miranda or Convergent Design products at this time and find the AJA product a perfect fit for what we are doing here with this series.
As for noise in the signal, if it’s there, it’s imperceptible to these eyes.

Walter is absolutely correct. You have this fantasy that analog HD has all this noise in it, and that firewire is the only way to go (via the Convergent Design or Miranda). Price or no price, for all my BROADCAST INSTALLATIONS that require HDV, I use the Sony HVRM-25U, and feed this into a HD10A (I have not used the AVA yet), and go into either an AVID Adrenaline HD, and AVID Nitris, or an AJA Kona 3. I have never had one broadcast customer complain even a little, from the HD10A HD-SDI signal feeding an AVID Adrenaline HD.This applies to analog audio products as well. With a S/N ratio of -95dB, no one can tell the difference between a hi end analog audio product, and a digital audio product – especially one with poor sampling, and poor A/D and D/A converters in it (you have to hear it somehow !).
So John, I am sorry, but I do not know what you are talking about – regardless of the price.

August 23, 2006 at 11:03 pmInteresting thoughts. My reasons for choosing the Convergent box was because of my workflow. I work with the DVCPro HD codec, so I didn’t want to be adding compression noise to analog noise.
One of my systems has a Blackmagic Extreme with component analog in. I’ll try and run some tests to see if there is a noticeable difference by the time it all ends up as DVC Pro HD.
And Bob, I couldn’t agree more on the audio side of things.
Cheers guys.
