Sounds like you’ve answered your own post… if you add certain RAM chips the problem shows up? sounds like bad RAM then, right?

  • Try going back to 10.3.8 and QT 6.5.2.

  • Then from a business point of view FCP blows the doors off an Avid system. If you are not going to use Unity there’s not a reason on earth that your rental business should be renting Avid instead of FCP.

Furthermore, I’ll put out another thought:
I’ll bet there are 10 FCP editors out there for every Avid editor. That means your customer base is much larger if you are renting FCP systems. Just makes sense doesn’t it?

I can’t tell you why you had the problem, but I don’t have it here doing very similar things. It sounds to me like you’ve done the right thing, so maybe a reinstall of Compressor will fix you up.

June 3, 2005 at 3:12 pm in reply to: Is MAC the fastest.

Having a faster computer isn’t all to the experience, nor to the total workflow. Macs cost more upfront, but cost less to own (Case in point: My 4.5 year old Mac is still worth about 5-600 bucks. show me ONE PC that cost less than 2k that you can say that about?

Well over 50% of the editors out there prefer Macs. It’s not about speed, it’s about the ease of use and reliability. So I guess I’m saying that having faster is necessarily better, I’m sure over time Mac’s will be faster then PC’s then back to Macs… What difference does it really make?

The real question you should be asking is what do YOU want to run? FCP? then Mac’s the choice, Premiere, Vegas or Avid? Then you have another option, but I’d not want to run a PC for reasons far beyond speed. When a PC breaks down for a day a years worth of speed advantage goes right out the window… right? The sheer elegance of the Mac OS is far more important… FCP is a bargain for what it can do, so the speed thing isn’t important to the experience thing…

That said, there’s no doubt Macs of the future will be faster than Macs of today… and those that know what Apple is up to can’t talk, those that talk don’t know.

June 3, 2005 at 3:03 pm in reply to: DV Deck recommendation with Final Cut?

Any Sony or Panasonic machine is great. Stay away from all others… DSR-11’s are certainly workhorses.

Might consider Sony’s new HDV machine, it also plays DV, DVCAM…

Running 10.3.9 and the Decklink is a no no… either run 10.3.8 with it’s driver, or 10.4.1 with it’s driver…

I’m not sure, but the good folk at AJA would know for sure about your questions I’d email them or give them a call… From the reports of how long it takes to encode HDV to SD MPEG-2, I’d be prone to not want to work in HDV…. yikes… someone reported a 59 hour encode for a 2 hour show the other day… on a dual G5…

I have seen HDV 1080i 60 upconverted with that box and results were fantastic…

May 31, 2005 at 9:03 pm in reply to: Final Cut and After Effects File is Busy Error

If you don’t use the exact same file in both places you won’t run intot the busy error… duplicating the file would work, but there’s no round tripping between AE and FCP. Automatic Duck might be helpful though. https://www.automaticduck.com

However there is roundtripping between FCP, Motion, Livetype, and Soundtrack Pro… maybe what you need to do in AE, Motion and/or LiveType could do?
