I keep getting a General Error on a long standing film project I am trying to finish.

I have nearly 90 hours of footage captured at Photo JPEG quality
    FCP Project file is 270Mb

After months of happily editing with no problem I started getting problems after duplicating sequences and editing down my sequences.
The problem now also occurs on the sequences I duplicated from.

Sequences have 3-way colour correction applied to clips with 2 x PNG grad applied over top two layers (layer composition set to multiply on one and the other screen)

    So far I have:

    Just thought…

Quicktime has been updated shortly before this started happening.

    COULD THIS BE THE PROBLEM?????

    Cheers

Yes, defintely. OS 10.3.9 isn’t very stable either. Update to QT 7.0.1 if you haven’t already.

    Good Luck!

I agree with the previous posts.

    I have some comments:

    1. I admit in advance this is a long shot, but do you have more than one brand of RAM installed in your machine? Sometimes, having more than one brand of RAM can cause the strangest things to happen.

    2. Have you tried opening your project under a different user login? If you don’t get any errors then, then you know the problem is with your user. If this is the case, you should create a new user and operate from that. It would be nice to narrow down exactly what is problematic about your user, but that could be tricky. To be thorough and clean about it, system-re-installation would be the way to go, if the problem is with your user.

    3. I have also seen this “General Error” message. I laughed out loud when I saw it, thinking it was a joke. Please, let’s not have a “Specific Error” that we could actually troubleshoot! I mean, if I get an “error of type -xx occurred” that’s at least something I can send to a tech somewhere. But “General?” That’s just insulting. In my case, the error went away, though I can’t remember the circumstances. But I don’t ever remember there actually being a problem, just a weird message.

    Good luck!

Try going back to 10.3.8 and QT 6.5.2.

Have you tried eliminating the PNGs? I have seen the General Error only with incompatible or corrupt media.

    hey Dull –

yeah, go back to QT6.5. Never make a major change like that in the middle of a huge (or any) project.

I was getting general error warnings on a recent project and found it was a problem between my AJA and DV deck hooked into the FW ports. I reset the settings, refreshed media devices, and for some strange reason the errors went away.

But try the QT backgrade first.

QT7 is a dog. Archive & install to 3.8 & 6.5.2 as suggested above and I bet you your problems go away.

Carbon copy clone your disk first though 🙂

You’ve upgraded to QT 7.0.1 and stated you did all the usual fixes but did you do the usual fixes after upgrading? Repair permissions once more and trash prefs once more General errors usually are cured with a simple trash of the prefs.
