Yeah, I have a Kona SD, and used the last of the Blackmagic drivers with it. However I’m using a Kona 2 card now almost all the time, with it’s latest drivers 1.1.1. The Kona SD card is set to have FCP handle effects. The Kona 2 card doesn’t give you the option. I think it’s acellerating RT Extreme all by itself as I recall.

I haven’t seen much of a slowdown at all with project files that are as large as 1200 edits in them… and the one I’m referring to is full of effects. 9 layers, piles of single frame edits nested, composite modes… pretty much the works… I think with an update to FCP 5, you should be very good to go with it. I think too that Tiger’s update and no doubt future updates will also be the way to go with the Suite.

Can’t have too much RAM BTW… this does improve things with complex sequences, however I think the limit that FCP 4.5 can use is 4 gigs, so a total of say, 5 or more (leaving some for the OS) might improve things where you are now. Might try it by robbing some chips from one system and installing in another?

FCP 5 did improve this a lot… But for now, break your sequence down a bit into “sub sequences” and work with them. Marry them in the end. It’s not the project file size causing this as much as a long complicated sequence.

I don’t see the problem here… yikes. Try trashing your preference file, but I sort of fear a reinstall is in your future…

Before you export the file, try the”collapse multiclips” command found by right clicking on a clip after you select the multiclips, and don’t forget to turn off the “make self contained option”… you can toggle this off and on the same way all you want too.

KP’s are pointing at a problem in the OS… It’s time to do a clean install of it for SURE… An archive and install is worth a try, but nothing beats a backup of files, and erase and install and reinstall of all things FCP Studio…

June 5, 2005 at 3:24 pm in reply to: HDV Crashing

It’s working pretty good here with the limited HDV material I have. Might be an install problem of some kind. How did you get to the OS you are running now? Did you do a clean install and not any “upgrades” (updates OK, but upgrades are dicey). Also might be best to do a totally clean install of OS, and FCP 5…

Walter’s probably right on the money here… not bad, but mismatched somehow. I’m quite certain that all the RAM chips have to match spec wise to work together right… and your testing points right at the RAM not matching. Crucial is the way to go here… it always works, is spec’d correctly etc… I too only use Crucial.

Duplicate the capture preset you are using now. When the capture preset editor opens, click on the advanced button in the audio area, and turn the speakers to ON…
