If you are using Title 3D, I’d reinstall it… download it from Apple’s download area…

Won’t do 10 bit without an external disk array… will do 8 bit however if you put it on a second internal SATA and not your startup disk.

Sounds to me like it’s getting ready to go south… I’d back it up right away… That said, is it a fan making the noise, or the drive mechanism itself? If the drive mechanism, backup now… it may die shortly… This isn’t normal.

That’s right… the meters only work during the viewing… heck once you set your levels (when capturing DV you can’t change them anyway), I reallly don’t see the need for them. The reason that this feature was sort of buried before in the earlier versions of the softaware is because it adds computer overhead to do it. When capturing on a slower mac, this caused dropped frames, so that’s why the options was also there to turn off the pass through of the audio during capture.

About the only thing to do then is play around with different notch filter audio filters. Might be able to notch out some of the noise that way, but if the frequency of the noise is the same as the audio you want to preserve, its really not gonna work very well because you’ll notch out that too. I’d suggest if you have the bugdet to go to an audio studio with pro tools and have them work on it… or someone with Soundtrack Pro maybe could come to the rescue.

In the clip settings tab of the log and capture window of FCP 5, turn on the “Preivew” button in the audio section… the audio then can be heard thru your computer’s speakers. In earlier versions of FCP, you can create a capture preset which will do the same… it’s done by duplicating your current capture preset, clicking on the advanced button in the audio section of the preset editor window which will open upon duplication of the current preset, and turning the speakers to ON.

July 7, 2005 at 4:04 am in reply to: Need advice on outfitting a G5 to encode HD MPEG 4 materialYou’ll need a serious capture card, and a serious disk array to work in uncompressed HD… A great solution is a Kona 2 Card from AJA, and a Very FAST array from Huge Systems, or possibly Medea or Apple’s X Serve RAID… I don’t believe there is a card that will capture MPEG-4 from an HD machine on the fly… so you’d have to capture it uncompressed, then encode the stream on your computer.
