Just have a firewire drive question. Got a 2 year old EZquest Firewire drive that is making strange noises. Ok when first start up. then spins up hard, then down. Then a constant buzz. Any way to check what’s going on? is this at all normal every once in a while?

    thanks

Sounds to me like it’s getting ready to go south… I’d back it up right away… That said, is it a fan making the noise, or the drive mechanism itself? If the drive mechanism, backup now… it may die shortly… This isn’t normal.

I worked at ajoint that had a few of the ez quest cobra drives (big silver plastic thing, right?). It always made strange noises at start up and always worked like a champ, even though it sounds like a garbage disposal.

it’s very erratic. can’t tell if its only the fan. just backed up, and now looking for new firewired drive. Should I make sure to get Firewire 800. My new powerbook has a port, but my desktop does not. Are people using it for FCP HD, or does it not make a difference?

    thanks

If you’re gonna get a FW 800 drive, get a PCMCIA card to go along with your PowerBook and a PCI card to go with the Tower, That way the data will be flowing on a separate bus than your DV deck.
