I cannot seem to monitor FCP audio meters during capture of analogue source. I am using FCP 5.0 on Tiger. The meters are moving until you go into capture mode. Is this normal?

Yes this is normal. This has to be in my top five things I hate about FCP. Also havung the timecode display disable during capture is also totaally bogus. This has to be dealt with.

In the clip settings tab of the log and capture window of FCP 5, turn on the “Preivew” button in the audio section… the audio then can be heard thru your computer’s speakers. In earlier versions of FCP, you can create a capture preset which will do the same… it’s done by duplicating your current capture preset, clicking on the advanced button in the audio section of the preset editor window which will open upon duplication of the current preset, and turning the speakers to ON.

Turning the speakers on does not enable the audio meters during capture

Are you on FCP 5. Is this a new feature? Because it certainly doesn’t work in 4.5

Nope, I’m still on 4.5 here. Look, you have to do what Jerry said earlier on this thread:

“In earlier versions of FCP, you can create a capture preset which will do the same… it’s done by duplicating your current capture preset, clicking on the advanced button in the audio section of the preset editor window which will open upon duplication of the current preset, and turning the speakers to ON.”

Basically just go to your Audio/Video settings, Capture Preset tab. You will need to edit whichever preset you are using to capture (Component, SDI, whatever) so click on “Edit”. (You may have to duplicate the setting first because FCP is not supposed to let you change the original presets– so you can’t screw anything up permanently.) Near the bottom on the right under audio settings is an “Advanced” tab. Click this, then change your speaker to “On” and then click OK OK to save the new setting.

From here you should be able to see the audio levels whilst logging footage. I will say that this is sometimes a bit buggy– I’ve had to do it twice before to get it to “stick”. Even then sometimes it seems to forget that I turned that speaker on, but give ‘er a whirl.

Hope this helps. Let me know what happens.

It doesn’t work on mine. I am coming in analogue via AJA IO. I get the usual picture, as soon as I hit capture the audio meters freeze (with preview selected). I am on FCP V5.0 with Tiger.

Thanks for the info. My issue is not about audio meters while logging or playing tapes in the the log and capture window, it’s about audio meters that don’t work during the actual capture itself. Whether it be a capture now/clip/or batch. the moment you actually hit capture it disables.
