I’m not surprised the compressed audio on a HDV camera’s tapes isn’t very good… not much to do here, but do a record to a mini disk or dat or whatever instead of using the HDV camera’s audio in the future….would that be possible? FWIW, the audio is in an MP3 format on that camera, not MPEG 1… My film students are doing just that, and it working out OK, however you have to sync this audio of course manually….
Comon’ Panny get that 200 out there, you’re gonna sell a TON of them. HDV is a consumer format for sure…

Is the outside editor also using FCP? if so, I’d think I’d just have him send the project file and not XML… Then try relinking to the files from his “original” sequence.
If he changes the names of the master clips, you’ll find this doesn’t work in any event. Using renamed subclips is OK, but I’ll wager that the info needed within these subclips to reconnect to original master clips may be getting lost in the XML export… dunno fur sure, but figure something like this is going on.

You need to demux the files first… Search this forum on “demux” and you’ll find some free or inexpensive software suggestions for this.

My total guess would be that the server needs be formatted for Mac… not windows… do know that if it is formatted that way, it probably would do the job. Any chance of that happening?

This is about the first time I’ve read of FCP3 running in Tiger, so don’t know if indeed that is the problem. However an upgrade to FCP 5 would more than likely fix you up.
You bought the pro version of QT 7 then? so you could export MPEG-2?
Might save some money though if you don’t need to do the upgrade… If you didn’t install Tiger as a clean install ( you just clicked “upgrade” from the tiger disk) you’ll likely have problems with FCP. So if you were to try a clean install you might clear things up (as in erase and install AFTER you’ve backed up all files you need to keep, or better yet, buy another internal drive to add to your mac and install tiger and FCP on that new drive, leaving the old intact so you can move files at your liesure, or add them with the tiger install automatically).

1. put all the subclips you want to keep in a sequence end to end.
2. select that sequence in the browser and control click to open media manager.
3. Select copy, Delete unused media, and select the option to create a new project file. I’d name those subclips first also, and then use the option to keep those names in the copies. To be sure that all’s well with your settings, READ the summary of what you are getting ready to do in the top area of the Media Manager window. Then click OK.
4. MM does it’s job, you check the copies which will now open in a new project file with that sequence, and clips you’ve created will be in a “media” folder.
Make sure that the copies are OK.
5. Delete the original media in the first project file by selecting all master clips, then right click and select the “make offline” command. Trash them.Jerry

Might start by trashing your preference file for FCP…
Post which versions of OS, FCP, and QuickTime you are using too.

Not sure about this, but seems to me they’ll stay there as long as there is a project file containing a sequence that references these files. Until you delete that sequence from the project file it’s in, and then reopen it, they will remain. I don’t work on copies of project files ever and don’t seem to see a bunch of renders I don’t need because of this I guessing.

I wonder if you change the extention of the multiplexed file to .mv or m2v…? Is the problem that the file doesn’t work for them, or that everyone is assuming that it’s the wrong format?

Might try going directly with a self contained movie to DVD SP and compressing it there, or in Compressor… if it’s failing at 90%, figure too that you might have a bad media file 90% into the sequence… Exporting a self contained movie might work to fix that, or recapturing and/or re rendering that part of the sequence. Render files can be corrupted too.
