Forrest- To get you over the hump until you get the capture card try this. NO other firewire devices can be on the firewire bus your deck is on. You may need to install another firewire bus in a PCI slot (about $20). Then connect your deck to that. Also check to see that your drop/non-drop settings match between your deck and FCP settings. Once you’ve done these things and you are still having problems then test different HDV machine control settings until you find one that works. HDV firewire machine control can be very frustrating. Once you get it working MAKE AN EASY SETUP.

Johnny- Sounds like it might be a media/drive issue. Are you sure you have no media on your SYSTEM DRIVE?

Fernando- OK… progress. Now it seems there is a settings mismatch between your timeline and your camera. First make sure your timeline is 100% HDV PAL that matches your camera. You verify this when you place your native HDV clips in the timeline. If you get a render bar at the top of the timeline the timeline does not match your HDV clips! Be sure your timeline matches your clips.

Now make sure your camera is in full HDV mode with NO down-convert settings in the I/O menu or firewire settings. If you need to make changes to your camera settings close out of FCP and disconnect the firewire. Make the changes THEN reconnect the firewire THEN relaunch FCP.

Did you go to Audio/Video settings>AV devices in FCP and verify that “Different Output for Edit to Tape/Print to Tape is set with the proper HDV settings for both video and audio for your camera?

You will know everything is working when you go to Print to Tape and FCP starts the conforming process. If you don’t get a conforming process then the settings are wrong. Once you have a match on your settings please create a custom Easy Setup for future use.

Fernando- I am going to presume that FCP is seeing your HC9 (ie. log and capture is working). Go to Audio/Video settings>AV devices. Be sure Different Output Edit to Tape/Print to video is checked and HDV Pal is selected for both Video and Audio. Remember, there is a conforming process then FCP will have you roll tape (record) and go.

Carlos- First verify that FCP is communicating with your camra/deck via Log and Capture. Quit out of Log and Capture. Go to A/V Settings and check ‘Different Output for Edit to Tape/Print to Video and choose HDV for both video and audio. Go to Print to Tape. You’ll have a conforming process which is part of the HDV codec.

Blake- For some reason with HDV the device needs to connected and turned on BEFORE you launch FCP.

Ok, I have the same deck and it’s working fine. You didn’t answer if the computer was seeing the deck.
If you got the “unknown device” dialog box then I presume that was within FCP. The next next thing I’d check are the menu settings in the GV-HD700>Menu>In/Out Rec> HDV OR DV (don’t use auto)> I link conversion> Off.

Blake- Let’s start with the deck. Shut down the computer. Disconnect ALL firewire devices except the deck. Power up the deck. Power up the computer. Apple icon in upper left corner>get info>firewire.
Is the deck recognized by the computer? If not there is a problem with the firewire cord from the deck or the deck has a blown firewire port.

Now the camcorder. Close out of FCP. Disconnect all other firewire devices. Have the camcorder connected and powered up. Launch FCP. If your settings are right on the camera and FCP your camcorder should be recognized by FCP.

Hank- Can I take multiple clips in a time line and make them into one continuous clip?

Ya sure ya betcha… as grandpa would say. Just export the timeline via quicktime movie (current settings)
then import the clip back in. Fini.
