Ok, I’m capturing HDV material from a Sony HVR-M25U deck Via
FW on a brand new Mac Pro dual 2.8, 10 GB ram, etc. EVERY time I try to capture a whole tape, it breaks it up into a ton of clips. I hit “After TC break-Warn after capture” Well it just stops capture and says no dice- Thing is, there are NO TC breaks, the cam is rolling the whole time. Ive switched FW cable, drives, machines etc. I’m losing it, I called the old AE and he said don’t worry, it happens all the time with HDV. Yet all my other fellow AE’s whom I’ve known for years are dumbfounded too. PLEASE HELP-I will make you cookies!!!

I believe it’s in the HDV Log and Capture window.

Are you using the rear FireWire port on the computer?

one way to solve this once and for all
is to just bite the bullett and get
a capture card and capture it as DVCPRO-HD.

Or even ProRes. That’s all we do here, capture to DVCPro HD and ProRes. We don’t have any issues with HDV whatsoever, except for the lag in shuttling tape, but that’s minor.

Forrest- To get you over the hump until you get the capture card try this. NO other firewire devices can be on the firewire bus your deck is on. You may need to install another firewire bus in a PCI slot (about $20). Then connect your deck to that. Also check to see that your drop/non-drop settings match between your deck and FCP settings. Once you’ve done these things and you are still having problems then test different HDV machine control settings until you find one that works. HDV firewire machine control can be very frustrating. Once you get it working MAKE AN EASY SETUP.

    Good luck,
    Jerry

[Forrest Love] “it breaks it up into a ton of clips”

I believe that this is completely normal with HDV. It is because of the GOP structure that HDV records in.

Yep, with start / stop detection on this will happen.

Even with it off, HDV is renown for tons of “phantom” time code breaks so when capturing HDV it’s always best to have the TC Break set to “Warn After Capture” in the User Prefs.

Even with “Warn After Capture” it still haunts me. HDV is for the birds..
