[Forrest Love] “Even with “Warn After Capture” it still haunts me. HDV is for the birds..”

All I can tell you is we’ve been using it successfully for 2 years now for HD broadcast work, though we NEVER capture to the HDV format. It’s always converted during ingest via our Kona 3 boards.

    Forrest,

Which version of FCP are you using presently?

[Forrest Love] “6.0.5 On all 3 edits suites”

Well, that shoots down my theory.

Maybe that deck is having issues? That’s all I can offer. I capture 45-min plus interviews all the time from HDV to ProRes via firewire without any issues, so no matter what you hear, the issue you’re having is not inherent in all HDV.

So go straight to Pro Res? If so I’ll do a test in a free edit bay.

If you have the proper machine AND you run in Capture Now mode. There’s a tutorial right here on the Cow from Chris Poisson on how to do this.

Yes, but be sure to use the Chris Poisson method as outlined in the following tutorial: https://library.creativecow.net/articles/poisson_chris/hdv-prores.php.

No, it works on any machine, even non-Intel G5s and it doesn’t use Capture Now mode.

David, are you saying my quad G5 which drops frames and cancels capture within
10 seconds when I try to capture HD 1080 ProRes will actually succeed if it’s
    over a firewire connection?

    I’m still running 6.01 so I don’t have that capture preset/capability yet.
was that first offered in 6.02?
