FCP Firewire connection

Ceri- Try closing out of FCP and go the Apple menu (apple icon in upper left corner) and select ‘more info’. Does the deck show up there? It may be a firewire conflict with other firewire devices. Don’t proceed to FCP until your computer sees the deck.

Same situation here. For me, no, “more info” does not see the deck. It sees my camcorder, but FCP cannot connect to the camcorder either. Firewire Missing.
Trashed FCP prefs… Old Quicktimes… tried new cable… Tried in iMovie, which recognizes the camcorder but not the deck. Tested computers Firewire port, it works.
Not sure what to do next. Ugh.

Blake- Let’s start with the deck. Shut down the computer. Disconnect ALL firewire devices except the deck. Power up the deck. Power up the computer. Apple icon in upper left corner>get info>firewire.
Is the deck recognized by the computer? If not there is a problem with the firewire cord from the deck or the deck has a blown firewire port.

Now the camcorder. Close out of FCP. Disconnect all other firewire devices. Have the camcorder connected and powered up. Launch FCP. If your settings are right on the camera and FCP your camcorder should be recognized by FCP.

Jerry it helped. Final Cut recognized the Z1u. Why now and not several times before, I do not know.
Does not recognize the GV-HD700 deck… “Unknown Device”

So… Blown Firewire Port On deck you think?

Blake- For some reason with HDV the device needs to connected and turned on BEFORE you launch FCP.

Ok, I have the same deck and it’s working fine. You didn’t answer if the computer was seeing the deck.
If you got the “unknown device” dialog box then I presume that was within FCP. The next next thing I’d check are the menu settings in the GV-HD700>Menu>In/Out Rec> HDV OR DV (don’t use auto)> I link conversion> Off.

iMovie would recognize the camera (z1u) but not the deck. I tried this in various start-up situations. iMovie would find the Z1u no matter when I hooked it up, but never the deck.
“About This Mac” would only say “Unknown Device”. The deck settings were correct (I’ll add A/V> Off to your list).
… Called Sony They had me reset the deck, via a pin hole under deck “hold down for 2 seconds”.
They agreed that it sounded like the Firewire port. So, for better or worse, I’ve already mailed it to Texas… 7-10 days. Still under warranty.
Thanks for your effort Jerry really appreciate your time. Now, I hope it was the Firewire Port.
I see your in to fishing? I should pay you to catch me some Halibut. My favorite filet. Brought back 2 boxes from Alaska several years ago. I was in Friday Fish Fry Heaven for a couple months.
