    A couple of things to note. This card doesn’t use an Infiniband connector. As such, cost is much lower. If you assume that a typical SATA drive moves data at 65MB/second, you are going to saturate the 1 multiplier port with just 4 drives. Thus, you should keep this in mind when purchasing a drive chassis to complement the SATA board.

    FYI, the 40% more processing power refers to the main chip on the card, not the PCIe bus. As such, this means, as was alluded to in the press release, that there is a LOT of room for more features on this card over the Kona2. Truth be told, there isn’t really any more room on the Kona 2 to do more than it already does as far as hardware capabilities. The Kona 2 can still do plenty more via its software driver, however. So the Kona 2 is not an End Of Life product, by no means.

    Keep in mind that the 2K block size that Huge is unusually, well, huge. Moreover, if you are using Apple Drive Utility, we have performed a bunch of tests with it and found very little difference.

    In general, smaller chunks are better for audio, especially ProTools, which is very sensitive.

    Getting back to Walter’s question for a moment…

    Bob is dead on with why agencies haven’t moved to HD. I will also add that it also has to do with the Post Facilities telling them about the HUGE cost differential. As we all know, that cost differential in our workflows is pretty minimal.

    As to the aesthetic, Prime Time shows and sports and now mostly HD. By the same token, they are “Center Cut Safe”. This means, while they shoot, their camers’s viewfinders all have 4:3 Center Cut granicules or overlays. Graphics are all kept in this 4:3 Center Cut area.

    Given the controlled environment of a commercial, I don’t see why this would not work.

    The networks will take either a version for HD or SD or both.

    Most affiliates pass through the HD signal with little or no local HD insertion. The affiliates have blown their money on new towers and transmitters (not to mention the substantial electricity costs) and are saving their pennies for the rest of the build out due to the penetration issues and their lack of.

    Actually, there is a fix for this. Call AJA support for the FCP patch. This patch is for SD Panasonic decks only.

    Walter,

    Did Apple go back to putting ADB and SCSI on the motherboard? Do Apple go back to NuBus? Personally, I think it was idiotic that Apple went totally PCIe without any PCI or PCI-X slots. There are no other bus architectures on the horizon to replace PCIe right now. PCI lasted about 11 years and counting. PCIe is only about a year old. I think we can agree, it has plenty of mileage left.

    As to current PCIe cards not working in an Intel Mac motherboard, this is ridiculous. PCI/PCIe cards are platform agnostic. It is their drivers that are platform specific. As an example, an ATTO UL4D is the same product for Macs or PCs. Even AJA’s LHe is the same card for both platforms. So peeps, don’t sweat it. You just have to sweat the entire conversion of software to Macintel.

    I would put money on the Future Intel box will be PCIe. Apple doesn’t like to admit to mistakes, so you can probably say good-bye to PCI-X, unfortunately.

    FYI, for those who want to keep using their perfectly fine PCI-X and PCI cards, SBS makes a PCIe-to-PCIX expansion chassis. We’ve tested it and it works great.

    If you follow the thread, the poster referenced a bunch of simple cables with no active electronics. Of course you can get Green from YUV, but not without some active electronics.
