New Sonnet Card
Posted by Gary Taylor on January 10, 2006 at 4:36 pmI don’t imagine anyone has had a chance to check this card out but what do you think about the new Sonnet PCIe card?

Do you think the port multiplication will provide to perfomance they are implying? Had anyone worked with port multiplication on some other product line.
Thanks,

January 10, 2006 at 4:39 pmI think it’s looking good, less cables between the computer and external drives! I’ll go from 8 to 2. Gotta love that.

January 11, 2006 at 2:16 amThank God this card came out. With the Kona 3 out, I had no SATA card to use (and I don’t trust or like Highpoint). I will get one of these cards ASAP and let you know.

January 11, 2006 at 12:42 pmI just wish you could pre-order. I was told to check the web site in a week or two.
AAHHH, can’t wait to get the Quad into my edit room and say goodbye to the CineWave.

AAHHH, can’t wait to get the Quad into my edit room and say goodbye to the CineWave.”I’m just really cautious now about ordering any of the current Dual Cores after seeing the new laptops yesterday. Just how fast, and how much cooler, are the Intel Dual Cores going to be on the desktops when they are released? I really don’t want to drop about $6,000 purchasing a new Dual Core, new Fibre Card, new Kona 3 and then see Apple release a kick butt Intel Quad this Summer or Fall.
The way I look at it, I have two Dual 2.0’s that are cutting High Def broadcast shows, so I’m all set. Yes the Quad is really sexy, but I’m going to stay put and wait to see what Intel and Apple show us when the G5 replacement comes out.

January 12, 2006 at 10:24 amA couple of things to note. This card doesn’t use an Infiniband connector. As such, cost is much lower. If you assume that a typical SATA drive moves data at 65MB/second, you are going to saturate the 1 multiplier port with just 4 drives. Thus, you should keep this in mind when purchasing a drive chassis to complement the SATA board.

January 13, 2006 at 2:23 pmJeff was talking about saturating the port using only 4 drives, so the 5th is Overkill? Since the card doesn’t use an Infiniband connector.
I have a total of 8 drives 4 per external case, so no concern….yet.
