Decklink to Y/C (S-Vid)? Any low cost converters?
Posted by Jon Watkins on November 10, 2005 at 4:54 pmCan anyone point me to a solution to get a Y/C (S-Vid) connection out of my DecklinkSP? I have seen the Aja D4e but was hoping somebody knew of something cheaper.
Thanks!

November 10, 2005 at 5:47 pmI’m not entirely sure of this and someone who knows can say for certain, but …
If one were to ‘combine’ the R-Y and B-Y outs into one and take the Y as one and then ‘shoe-horn’ these into a S-video jack. Y as Y and R-Y and B-y combined into one as C you should have Y/C.Right? Again, I’m not sure. In fact I’m not even sure if tryong this out would damage your SP card.

November 10, 2005 at 10:16 pmThanks for the input guys- but a few questions for Mike and Jeremy. Mike- which converters specifically do you refer to on your weblink? All I really see are S to RCA adapters. And Jeremy, how exactly does this cable interface with the decklink? The Y (of Y/C) I assume will come from the Decklink Y, but what about the chroma? How do I get the Y-B and Y-R signals combined?
For a little more clarification- again what I am trying to accomplish is Component Y, Y-R, Y-B OUTPUT from the decklink to S-Vid (Y/C) INPUT on my 9″ pro monitor (much higher quality than using the Y cable in composite mode -which I am currently using)
Thanks!

November 10, 2005 at 10:48 pmNevermind, decklink doesn’t support S-Video out.
You’ll need some sort of box or deck.

FYI – It is possible to have green if you have red and blue available, how do you think Y, Y-“R” and Y-“B” work?
and Neil you do have some interesting theory but it’s not gonna happen like that. Think of S-video more like native television format. Basically instead of routing CVBS on a single carrier, what you have is Luminance (VBS) and Croma (C – colour information) seperately. This way croma doesn’t have to piggy back Y (luma), which also means that Y gets full bandwidth. and we get better sharper video and better colours.
Digital motion, don’t even bother to convert composite to Y/C, you will still be looking at composite quality. Best would be to have component monitor.
Cheers

November 11, 2005 at 5:30 pmIf you follow the thread, the poster referenced a bunch of simple cables with no active electronics. Of course you can get Green from YUV, but not without some active electronics.
