Kona LH setup saga continues…
Posted by Chris Poisson on November 14, 2005 at 7:44 pmHey all,
Thanks for all the help this weekend, I’m about 98% there, just a few more wrinkles. The card seems to be functioning normally, FCP is displaying fine on my monitor and audio and everything is showing up on my Beta deck. I got the latest drivers tosay.
It seems I can print to video from the timeline okay, but when I launch the capture window things start to get spooky. I can see audio on my decks displays, but not in the FCP audio meters, and I get no audio on capture. I have my audio set to AJA audio. Video from the Beta deck is jumping all over the place, and I can’t get audio, and when I switch my component capture over to my DV deck, I can see an image in the capture window but I can’t capture any video or audio.
So WTF?
Have a wonderful day.

November 14, 2005 at 8:10 pmAJA audio can be many things – embedded, AES or analog. Go into your Audio/Video Settings/Capture presets, and select EXACTLY what kind of audio you are feeding your system.

November 14, 2005 at 9:10 pmHey Bob,
Yes, that worked, I reset audio to analog which is how it’s connected and now I’m getting it. Thanks!
The only other problem I’m still having is chattering video on capture from my Beta UVW1800 deck, I have to route the Y cable directly into the Y input instead of routing through the reference in, and then I can capture normally. Seems really stupid, but then I have to loop the Y cable back through the ref so I can see the picture on the monitor without horizontal scrolling issues.
BTW, I’m not using the AJA Ref in connector at all, don’t know where I would put it or what it would do. I don’t have a black burst generator if that makes a dif.
Have a wonderful day.

You are going to set Bob off again on the merits of using a black burst generator in your suite.
Spare yourself the pain and find the money to set your suite up right with a BB generator.
The cost of a used BB generator compared to all your other gear is a drop in the bucket.

November 14, 2005 at 9:36 pmHey Tony,
Somehow I could see this answer coming like the taxman. Somehow, with my Decklink card I didn’t need it but I suspect you are right. thanks.
Have a wonderful day.

November 14, 2005 at 9:47 pmTony is right Chris. I was a nice guy, and now I will have to kill you.
This is what you are going to do – you are going to either go to ebay and buy a used Horita BSG-50, or you are going to mail order one (or any other NTSC black generator), and STOP THIS NONSENSE. I know that Grant and the Blackmagic crew are trying to appeal to the “I don’t have 5 cents to build my edit system” (I am not implying that Blackmagic products are cheap – they are terrific) – but I have NO IDEA of why they encourage people to do this insane “Y out” jury rig trick. ALL PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS – ESPECIALLY SONY VTRS are designed to be GENLOCKED to a black reference generator. This is not a limitiation of AJA equipment – this is ALL PROFESSIONAL VIDEO EQUIPMENT FROM THE BEGINNING OF TIME. So stop it, just STOP IT – and go out and get a color black generator – stick one BNC from the gen into your Kona LH, and another BNC form the gen into your Sony VTR Ref Video input, and you will have no problems –you don’t want me to come over there, do you?

November 14, 2005 at 11:30 pmRight or wrong, I went out this afternoon and bought a Horita Black burst generator. This has never been about money to me, I just want my system to be simple, since I am not an engineer. Now I’m trying to get the thing to work, and my guy where I bought it says to just plug it into my Beta deck and forget it, but my FCP sequence is playing with all kinds of black crap on it, color is gone, and I’m just as much or more at a loss as before. This is really fu**ed. Sorry.
Have a wonderful day.

November 14, 2005 at 11:48 pmHorita Black Burst to your Ref In on the deck.
Also to Ref In on your Kona 2.
Set the Control Panel to the Ref In.
All should be well. There are dip switches on the back of Sony VTR’s in the Ref In area which needs to be flipped one way to terminate the ref and the other way to loop it out.

Jeff is SO correct – make sure you have a 75 ohm BNC terminator on the KL box Ref In, and make sure you have the 75ohm termination switch on your VTR Ref In to ON. And as Walter said – make sure that the Kona control panel (under the Control tab) is set to REF Video, and not to Free Run or Video IN.IF the system STILL does not work, TURN OFF YOUR MAC, and turn it back on. Sometimes the Kona gets confused about the reference, and a cold boot will make it behave properly.
If you are still having problems after this, write back, and we will help you. And if we don’t, AJA certainly will.
