Activity Forums AJA Video Systems Could it be true?

Good morning. I guess you don’t read any of these forums.

That’s right Gregg. Your Kona 2 WILL NOT fit into a new G5 Quad. But guess what – neither will any card from Blackmagic, Aurora, Pinnacle – or any storage PCI card from ATTO, Adaptec, Firmtek, Highpoint, Sonnet, or ANY OTHER CARD THAT YOU CURRENTLY OWN. Your screwed Gregg – screwed – now what will you do.

Here is what you will do Gregg – you will continue to make money with your EXCELLENT Kona 2 card, as will most of us, and enjoy making excellent hi quality videos, while you make lots of money. Of course, you can fly out to Cupertino, and go yell at Steve Jobs, but unless you get a PCI-EXPRESS card (like the new AJA Kona LHe), you AIN’T gonna get ANY old PCI or PCI-X card to fit in ANY of the new MAC PCI Express computers. Most people will worry about the vast amount of money they have invested in their storage products, and suffer over having to wait for ATTO, etc. to develop PCI Express host adaptors like the UL5D for their disk drives. MAC AVID owners, that must use ATTO cards, will simply WAIT until the UL5D is ready, before they even think of getting a Quad G5.

Shall I send you a box of tissues ? I’m not the smart ass – Steve Jobs is.

Well, I was going to respond to this query, but I’m not really sure I can follow that opening act from Bob.

What Bob says is correct and there has been a lot of discussions on this forum and others that the Dual Core machines cannot run any of the current hardware that’s out there, except of course for the new AJA Kona LHe.

If you want to run a Kona 2 today, then you can opt for the Dual 2.7 which is still a PCI-X machine.

Keep in mind that anything you purchase for a Dual Core machine today may not work in the Intel machines next year. So that’s why I’m staying with my Dual 2.0’s right now and if I decide to purchase a new machine, it will be the Dual 2.7.

Shoot guys! The Kon2e will be out before ya know it, so for about 7-8k you can start over (sounds cheap to me actually comparing this to the old Avid upgrade days) The drives will work, and nothin else… But you could make your current G5’s into capture stations down the line, and just keep them working for you.

I’ve asked several people this very question and nobody knows. We’ll just have to wait until they show up.

Well, remember I asked about a Kona 2e when the LHe came out and AJA didn’t have a release timeframe for it. And knowing that a Kona 2e may or may not work in the Intel machines makes me want to just wait and not waste $8k for a temporary solution. Purchasing a Dual 2.7 now lets me keep everything all the hardware I have now and increase the speed of my workstation at a much more reasonable cost. But of course, that’s if I evern purchase a 2.7, both suites are still running beautifully with the Dual 2.0’s.

I would put money on the Future Intel box will be PCIe. Apple doesn’t like to admit to mistakes, so you can probably say good-bye to PCI-X, unfortunately.

FYI, for those who want to keep using their perfectly fine PCI-X and PCI cards, SBS makes a PCIe-to-PCIX expansion chassis. We’ve tested it and it works great.

I did a search a couple of weeks ago on Google on the Intel based MAC’s, and I found some photos of the inside of the “alpha” MAC with the Intel chip set. I tried to post this link to this forum, and received a Cow message that I could not do it –
the picture that I saw (and who the hell knows if this was accurate or the real thing) – showed the Intel MAC box with PCI Express – but there were only TWO SLOTS for expansion cards. Like I said, who knows if this was a real picture, or if this was a beta, that does not reflect the actual product that will ultimately get released.

BUT based on the picture I saw – yes, PCI Express seems like it will be buss structure. But even with that said – who knows if the cards will be compatible anyway.

I would not put money on anything for the future when it comes to these computers. Again, I’ve asked around to some very knowledgeable folks and the answer is “we don’t know.”

That’s probably one of the machines Apple released in June after the WWDC to software developers so they could write code for it. Definitely a very very early beta version of the machine and I’m sure the hardware inside will change before it’s actually released to the public.

Good thing the Cow stopped you from posting that link. I really don’t think you want to see Apple’s lawyers anytime soon and I’m sure whoever posted that photo is in some very serious trouble.
