If you really think you will be doing a Dual-Link or 2K project, then you are forced to upgrade. You will need the extra horsepower of the Quad to pull off all the cool tricks in making 2K work. Remember, the Quad is about twice as fast as the Dual 2.5, plus with the PCIe, your apps are able to take full advantage of the GPU.

Actually, I would change the Kona Ref to Free Run. Also make sure that no sync is connected to the D5. The issue may be that your sync is just a little off. The Kona cards are hyper-sensitive to imperfect sync.

To that end, I can’t change the Project Setting’s Color Settings. Has anyone else seen this?

  • Just for giggles, try using this https://aja.com/ajashare/AJA_VTR_Xchange_1-0.zip and see if you get a consistent in-point. If not, the issue could very well be the driver. In which case, this would be an AJA issue.

To use VTR XChange, export your timeline as a Reference Movie out of FCP.

And one more things… GO ORANGE!

January 18, 2006 at 10:59 am in reply to: Gamma shift between FCP and Motion

Tom is correct in keeping things in RGB. Apple has a real mess on their hands as it relates to RGB-YUV conversion. They basically decipher Gamma incorrectly. To avoid it, the best method is to use Tom’s method.

FCP is not required to use its YUV mode unless you are looking to perform any time of effect. Since Tom was simply using FCP to laying graphic elements, I think he will be just fine.

If you are less than thrilled about this workaround, and who wouldn’t be, I suggest a hike over to this url https://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html

January 18, 2006 at 10:44 am in reply to: Blackmagic Codec vs Apple Uncompressed Hell

First off, let’s get one thing straight. Digi-Beta is a 10-bit format. Their camcorder, however, is 8-bit. End of story.

Second, Glenn, you are not alone. I think the issue is that so few people test or even bother to hook up a waveform monitor, that very few people even notice. We’ve been doing a series of tests and found jumps in Gamma as you have found. You will even see jumps in Gamma between multiple codecs, especially under Panther. You will find these jumps between Blackmagic, Animation, DV. Doesn’t matter. All will exhibit inaccurate conversion.

We brought this to the attention of Blackmagic several months ago with plenty of corroberating evidence and nothing has been done. I find it quite odd that a company that was founded on the whole principle of color fidelity and accuracy, now finds itself with this issue and is not running to fix it.

This issue affects those who need their files to run on other systems. Even more interesting is that if you have archived a project under Panther, then restore it under Tiger, you are really screwed. You better restore your Panther OS. If you replaced your hardware recently with a box that only runs Tiger, then you are SOL.

This problem is real and needs a real solution, real fast.

January 18, 2006 at 12:09 am in reply to: AE 7 & Ram

Must be an Acid Flashback. AE never addressed 4GBs of RAM. AE, however has been able to address multiple processors since 4.1. Dual-cores are taken advantage of as well. If your multi-threaded and multi-processor aware, you don’t need to do much more than that to take advantage of more processors. In the case of Steve’s app, it just takes hold of those processors more efficiently.
