Bob,
I saw the monitor the other day. The waveform is pretty basic, just showing luminance levels. It’s cool and is small in your choice of corners. Using it for SD, well, the scaler is not that good.
As an HD monitor, color is pretty good. My only issue is that it is too small for an edit bay.
To make it perfect, it should be 23″ and have a great scaler. If they can use 1920×1080 glass, that would be a bonus.
For those looking to use the Panasonic Plasma, while the price and color is pretty good, the 5-7 frame processing delay can be a deal breaker.
Thus, the search for the perfect replacement for the Sony L5 series continues. Way to go Sony!

Have you tried removing sync just for $hits and giggles?

November 1, 2005 at 6:34 am in reply to: Final Cut Pro – Edit to tape accuracy – does it exist? In general, the deck control system in FCP is not good. While it is better in FCP 5, it is still not that good. What really should happen is that there should be a mechanism for telling FCP which deck model you have attached. In the RS422 deck protocol, FCP could poll the deck to see which deck is connected, then change the preferences accordingly. But it doesn’t and it should. Heck, if we could just manually tell FCP which deck we have attached, that would be fine.
Please be aware that frame accuracy with FCP and a D5HD is nearly impossible, no matter how hard you try. With HDCAM SR, it is 100% repeatable (aka accurate), as is a DigiBeta.

Manny, you have touched upon a topic near and dear to my heart. The issue is that DV25 and DV50 are both locked to 720×480. Moreover, for whatever reason, FCP finds it difficult to handle the 6 line differential. As such, we can’t mix and match in the timeline. This results in a real issue. If a JPEG format in FCP took advantage of RT Extreme, this would not be as big an issue. Plus, with these JPEG formats, we would also have 4:2:2 color space and lower data rates, yet great quality.
So, my hope is that Apple will unleash the still untapped power of the GPU. Keep in mind, Avid Adrenaline can mix and match on the timeline on OS X with AGP. It should not require PCIe to accomplish, but it wouldn’t hurt by having the added bandwidth.

Now I will really date myself…
I attended the first MacWorld Boston and got a great deal on a 20MB, with an M, SCSI drive. After suffering with dual floppy, I was excited to update my 128K Mac with 1MB and Enhanced Upgrade that added SCSI support over the battery compartment. In any event, the Show Special for the 20MB drive was $649!

On a technical note, there is a major advantage to having both a PCI-E Graphics Card and Capture Card – throughput. Take an application like Motion 2. If you enable the QuickTime Output to the capture card, your frame rates plummet. This is due to the bottleneck of the AGP bus. With PCI-E, it is essentially a serialized and switched interface, as opposed to PCI-X which is parallel and hub-like.
This would then solve the bottleneck issues with Motion 2 and enable more real-time goodies that take advantage of the GPU.
By the same token, keeping PCI-X and replacing AGP with PCI-E would still be awesome, especially with the new ATI X1800. It would make today’s G5 look like a G3 with an ATI Rage 128.
I can now hear all of you with Upgraditis. Again, keep in mind that with this new motherboard, as with all new motherboard designs, it will take at least 4 months for the software guys to catch up with the hardware guys. So, if you are willing to take on the riggors of being an early adopter, more power to you.

I’ll throw my hat into the ring. For those of you who are doing graphics creation a la After Effects, it is our recommendation to go with either a Tektronix WFM601A/700 or WVR series. The reason is that Tektronix has an exclusive feature in their Gamut warning. The pixels that are out of gamut will actually blink. This makes reading a waveform monitor easy and idiot-proof. Since most video designer don’t even know what a front porch, let alone back porch are, this really foots the bill.
Interestingly, Tektronix makes a software plug-in for Avid with the same features as their scopes for about $1200. I begged them at NAB 2004 to make one for FCP and AE. I would encourage others to do some begging too for I think this would help many of you tremendously.

Obviously, Mody is moody. It is also obvious that he is speaking from experience. He must have at least 12 units.
