  • Anyone using the Panasonic 17″ LCD?

Posted by Jared Picune on November 4, 2005 at 8:32 pm

Just curious if anyone is using the Panasonic BT-LH1700W LCD monitor. It looks like it has some really cool features, as well as built is HDSDI. Plus the price is rather nice as well. But I have concerns about picture quality and color accuracy. So if anyone has any experience with this monitor please let me know what you think.

    Thanks in advance!

I just looked this up. I am intrigued by the built in waveform monitor, but I can tell you that a 17″ monitor is SMALL – and this monitor is not cheap (I believe around $3000) – I have used an Ikegami 17″ HD monitor (CRT) and it is small when you are used to a Sony PVM-20L5/1. So for this money, it seems expensive – especially when the 50″ Panasonic TH50PHD8UK is the same amount – $3000.

A DP I work with just tried it out on a shoot. I’ll try to get some feedback from him.

One of these days our panny rep is going to bring this unit into our shop so we can do a side by side comparison of it and my Sony PVM20L5/1.

I worked with one for 5 days last month on a location color grading project.
it matched exceptionally well against the BVM D20 I was using as my reference,
liked it so much I have one on order.

We just got one yesterday. I love it. Color looks very solid on it. I compared it to a broadcast CRT and feel comfortable doing color work. SD picture quality leaves a something to be desired as I guess it’s getting uprezzed (it’s not a CRT.) But I’m comfortable with the tradeoff as the motion is reliable and the price is right for all the options right out of the box. We got the hard case too so it will serve as field monitor aswell.

OK, I am researching this product, and I must admit – I am intrigued
by this LCD monitor. It’s expensive for a 17″ monitor, but it does not require any HD option cards to display HD, and it “claims” that it has a built in waveform monitor – which would make this the cheapest HD scope from anyone on the market – in addition to the fact that it must be at least an “ok” monitor for 3000 bucks.

Considering it does SDI, HD-SDI, and has a waveform monitor function, it seems like the perfect editor monitor for the AJA Kona 2. I am getting “caught up” in the printed info on this monitor, although nowhere on the web is a sample picture of the waveform display.

    Bob,

I saw the monitor the other day. The waveform is pretty basic, just showing luminance levels. It’s cool and is small in your choice of corners. Using it for SD, well, the scaler is not that good.

As an HD monitor, color is pretty good. My only issue is that it is too small for an edit bay.

To make it perfect, it should be 23″ and have a great scaler. If they can use 1920×1080 glass, that would be a bonus.

For those looking to use the Panasonic Plasma, while the price and color is pretty good, the 5-7 frame processing delay can be a deal breaker.

Thus, the search for the perfect replacement for the Sony L5 series continues. Way to go Sony!

I have just installed a RANE AVA 22d audio delay (for a 4 frame delay) to compensate for the Plasma delay. I am surprised that I have not heard more complaints about “I can’t work with this delay problem on these plasmas” from more people.

ps – as you know, you can’t get a PVM-20L5/1 from anyone anymore – it’s over.

I was actually going to post something about this as I’ve found out that all plasma screens have a delay due to the processing. I was wondering what kind of delay devices were out there to go between my Mackie board and the audio monitors. I’ll look into that RANE device, thanks Bob!

That’s not Panasonic, that’s Plasma. All plasma screens have anywhere from a 3 – 7 frame delay due to the processing of the image onto the screen. I have a Vizio 42″ and it’s about a 3 – 4 frame delay here. So what I’ve done temporarily is simply feed both video and audio to the Vizio and then feed the Vizio back out to the audio monitors on a separate path. So when watching the CRT, I listen to one path, when listening to the Plasma, another path.

Though now I’m going to look at that product Bob just mentioned below.
