Create a new solid above your footage and apply the Vector Paint effect. Instead of creating a mask outline, you’ll be painting the fill. There are controls on this effect that allow you to drop the opacity.
I’d recommend hitting the computer store for a cheap tablet before starting this.

You CAN turn those off, but you’ll be killing ALL layer handles as well if you do. At the top of the comp pane theres a little triangle. Pop it open and select View Option and uncheck Handles.
Experiment with the rest of the checkboxes while you’re in there.

Is it flickering on your computer monitor or your broadcast monitor? Also, make sure it’s at 100% of actual size.

Depending on the circumstances it might not be an intolerable amount of work to apply a simple mask along that edge and animate the Mask Position.

I’ve worked with stuff like this in FCP by chopping out every couple of frames and then using Delete to remove them and close the gap. How many depends on the direction you’re looking for. It’s time consuming to do it the way I did it, but I’d feel like a cheat if I used some plugin.

Go to [AE] Preferences and select Output. Make sure stuff there looks logical.

After appreciating the 3CC in FCP and using it a great deal, I actually now prefer to use AEs color correction tools to color correct. More steps, but more control.
A lot like PhoSho without all the destructive editing.
