Use Effects> Channels> Invert. To remove any blue tint, use Effects> Color Correction> Change to Color.

You won’t see it in preview unless you turn that on (via the dropdown menu in the upper right corner of the comp window).

Have you adjusted the focus distance to match distance to the farther particles?

I’d put on a Levels (or maybe the layer already has one). Bring the black in during the opacity drop. This will ‘expand’ the darks while the overall ‘brightness’ drops.
