That is strange. If you’re happy to share your project, I could take a look and see if I can spot anything.

If you’d rather not post it here, drop me a line: shiveringc then there’s an AT and then gmail.com

    (Will that fool the spammers??)

Best guess is the anchor point for each coloured shape is not in the center of the shape, so that when you use the align tools they are thrown off. I just did a quick experiment with shape layers and the repeater, but to be honest it ended up being a lot of maths and manual adjustment.

See if the anchor resolves it, if not try precomping one set of layers and duplicating that. At least you’ll get even spacing 🙁

  • That looks to me like a combination of Fractal Noise with the scale for width and height different, then the Polar Coordinates effect to turn the noise into a circle. With keyframes on evolution and offset, you should get the streaks you’re after.

  • You’re applying what is in essence a 2D effect to a 3D shape. I think the closest you can do is link the null’s positions to the gradient points.

An expression like this would help:

    thisComp.layer("Null 1").toComp([0,0,0]);

The other option would be to make your gradient a precomp and make 3D, then use your 3D shape as a track matte for it. I did something similar in my Phaser tutorial a while back:

    Hi Claire,

Well done for finding the solve and thank you for sharing it too.

  • What I’d do is create a rounded recentangle shape layer, which matching dimensions to your video. Then I’d copy the same corner pin effect to that. And then I’d use it as a track matte for the video. This way you should be able to round the edges.

To be honest, it’s really hard to tell what’s going on from the limited screen shots and your description.

Looking at the settings, it looks like you are trying to use effects to fill in the background, so that the text is all one layer.

But you’ve use Set Channels to achieve this, I would use Shift Channels instead. Set Channel is filling the dimensions of the precomp (at least that’s what’s happening when i try to recreate your set up). Shift Channels with Take Alpha From set to Full On should get you the result you’re after.

To save as an AE24 version, go to File… Save As… Save a Copy As 24.x …

Adobe support two previous versions, so you can also go back to v23.

I’ve not tried, (but keep meaning to) to use Save as Copy as XML. This in theory should allow you to pass projects to much older versions.

Is Collapse Transformations checked on the precomp ? It looks to me like the black solid in the background of the “race track” example is larger than the comp it is in and as a result of collapse transformations it is appearing uncropped.

Simplest solution would be to mask the comp, but as you are asking about Set channels, then I’d need to see the settings on that effect to tell anything further.

If you toggle the Mask and Shape Path visibility switch in the comp window, it should highlight where the 2D plane is. It’s a little odd, but my guess is they are both just off the stage.
