Is there a way to achieve this smear-like effect on the ball in after effects?
I’ve tried every way I can think of(echo, repeater, etc) but none is working. The part I can’t get is the way the “echoes” seem to reduce I’m size progressively, sort of how a taper would look with a stroke.
I’m relatively new to AE so I might be missing something but if it can’t be done using just after effects is there a plugin that can help me do this?

Did you upload the right video? I don’t see any ball.
Just based on your description, Trapcode Echospace lets you repeat a layer with offset animation and progressive transformation (that is, scale getting smaller), if you have Red Giant things.

That looks to me like a combination of Fractal Noise with the scale for width and height different, then the Polar Coordinates effect to turn the noise into a circle. With keyframes on evolution and offset, you should get the streaks you’re after.
