Seeing as you have a brick pattern, why not try using the Custom option instead of the brick pattern. That way you should be able to use your actual bricks to control the cutout.

  • Hi Cali,

The extrusion depth should match, so my guess is this break is flying towards or away from the camera, but it’s fall and tumble make it look like it’s thinner. Adjusting the Randomness and other Physics factors will probably solve this for you.

I feel like there is an eaiser way than the following, but I can’t think of it right now:

    • Create a new solid and add a Gradient Ramp, with the gradient going left to right
    • Add a second gradient and with this gradient running vertically, blend it with the original
    • Add a Mosaic effect, to create blocks.
    • Use a gradient wipe effect on your video layer

If you’re not quite happy with this, it might be simplest to use masks and keyframe their opacity. But that’s more time consuming.

I think I’d be tempted to use Time Remapping here. You can copy the timecodes as keyframes, then set keyframes either side of the one you want to replace and then paste in your copied values.

  • Is the Text layer left-aligned?

I think I would be tempted to “cheat” and have a layer underneath in the light green which is lined up, then the size and spacing of the letter wouldn’t matter

You could spend ages with SourceRectAtTime trying to perfectly match it or you can fake it and move on.

In After Effects, expand your two text layers so you can see the Source Text property. Then use a pickwhip to link the second to the first. Whatever text appears in the first text will appear in the second.

December 11, 2021 at 3:36 pm in reply to: Trouble with After Effects CS4

    Hi John,

That doesn’t sound great and I don’t have any suggestions really. Could it be something to do with accessibility settings (thinking of the magnification issue) or perhaps screen size? If it works fine in Snow Leopard, but not in Sierra, could you downgrade the Mac Mini (sorry, PC owner here, I don’t know if that’s possible)

I found this PDF which might help:

    https://helpx.adobe.com/archive/after-effects/after-effects-cs4-troubleshooting.pdf

If you’ve reinstalled, I imagine you have the latest release version of CS4 (that appears to be Adobe’s solution)

Ah, I found this website which mentions Sierra and After Effects:

    https://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/which-apps-dont-work-macos-3664177/

CS6 and earlier versions of the Adobe Creative Suite are not supported, this includes:

    After Effects CS6 and earlier

I’m skimming the article admittedly, but that suggests it isn’t possible with CS4 and Sierra.

  • Gosh, that looks complex. The shapes need to be a specific height, depending on their X position and their width changes. You might not be able to do this with the shape repeater, but if you get a single bar working, you could just then duplicate the layers.

I think you could probably (with a bit of tweaking)

    • Create a precomp with a line in it, angle this to about 25°
    • In the main comp, apply CC Cylinder to the precomp layer
    • Adjust the lighting to remove any shading
    • Animate the cylinder’s Y rotation.
    • Duplicate the precomp layer for each of the lines you want.

I made a similar-ish resiving pop up for my videos and had to add some maths to the Position and anchor points of the box. With the anchor always being central to the shape layer, you have to shift it’s position by half the width (sort of).

Here’s my tutorial, which includes the expressions code:
