Honestly, I don’t think you’ll be able to alter compression settings to improve this for YouTube.

It’s more entertaining than problem solving, but it does highlight the issue you’re having. and of course, even if you get a great final result, doesn’t mean everyone will be watching at the maximum settings. Alternatively, have you considered larger or fewer moving objects?

I feel your pain and while I haven’t had this with After Effects, I’ve certainly experienced the whole tiny font thing in other programs.

I came up with a way of looping footage using a precomp, time remapping and a simple fade expression. I used smoke stock footage to demonstrate it too:

Unfortunately it looks like your screenrecording hasn’t shared, I’m getting a “failed to connect” message. But I have heard of this issue before, Adobe acknowledged in March 2021, it is a bug:

Take a look at Adobe’s Character Animator. I use it in my tutorials for lip sync and have played around with the webcam feature for face-tracking. I particularly like that you can export the mouth shape values to After Effects.

It’s an older effect, but the included Particle Playground has an option for adding a constraining wall using a mask. You can use it fill up an irregular shape. The particles are 2D, but have position data and can use a texture.

I take it the Mosaic effect wouldn’t do this for you? It might not, just throwing it out there.
There is an expression function called sampleImage() That’s probably what you’re after.

That sounds strange. Have you saved your workspace recently? Is there a second effects control panel with a padlock?
What happens if you double-click on the effect in the timeline?

You hate it with the fire of a thousand suns? Wow, I mean I can imagine hating it with the fire of maybe 20 suns, but a thousand… 😉
Try using CTRL + i to open the import dialogue instead… or set up your own keyboard shortcut. It might save your stress levels.
