To freeze them, i’d make a ‘frozen’ still of the thermometer in photoshop and use gradient wipe to make it appear.
Then to shatter it, have you tried…um…Shatter? 🙂 You can control the moment of shatter by using the depth setting in Force1.

I’ve yet to play a DVD successfully in Windows Media Player. You need additional stuff from Microsoft (i think it’s all part of the anti-trust thing that means they aren’t included).
Players like PowerDVD or WinDVD have free options. Some commercial DVDs even come with software to install on them, Spiderman for instance.

We did something similar-ish a while ago. We actually had access to a treadmill, but we weren’t allowed to wreck it or paint it. In the end, we decided not to use it, because we didn’t need a full length shot. Instead, with a bit of practise, out ‘talent’ was able to walk on the spot in a convincing enough manner. Maybe it’s an option for you?
Alternatively, there’s this?
Don’t add the handles, and paint it green??

You can do this either as video or as a series of stills strung together. Once you’ve got your sequence, use the Radial Blur filter – set to zoom – and that should get you the zoom lines you’re after.

Bill O’Neil‘s tutorial on rotoscoping with Vector Paint is probably what you’re looking for. It might get you started.
Alternatively, the Echo filter is also worth looking at. ALthough you may want to motion track the golfball, and apply the track to a white, masked solid which you could overlay and fiddle with that.

I’ve used a fantastic little free program called Subtitle Workshop. It’s a very stable program and exports in a huge number of formats.

I do like the idea of using a menu instead of a timeline. I think the slideshow idea is pretty sensible too.
