720p25/50 is not a supported format in FCP. It became an accepted standard in the EU late last summer.
You can use the Kona 3 card- take the Kona 3 720p24 varicam easy setup and change ALL of the 24fps info to 25 save as a new setup and work.

May 17, 2006 at 12:07 pm in reply to: FCP crashing! in DVCPRO 720-24p with AJ-HD1200A deck[dpray] ” lots of rebooting to get clips to actually capture on the 2nd try, lots of checking settings, the usual BS associated with occasional TC drops and end-of-tape stuff. Never as easy as DV ftg.”
Something is not correct, except when running beta software, I have never had any of these issues. Capturing from the 1200a has always been as easy as working in DV. (except in 720p50) Time code Drops and end of tape issues are related to how you work– not whether the deck is functioning properly.
[dpray] “Whenever there is questionable footage on the 1200 deck, or at other random times, I’m seeing an E-2 error message on the deck and Final Cut Pro is completely crashing” Questionable footage??? Speed ramping, capturing bars and tone laid on tape, rewind the tape in camera for preview all can effect how the TC ins laid and therefore capture.
[dpray] “It’s not my G5 system (OS X 10.4.4) it’s not my FCP (5.0.4)– because I’ve tried the deck on a friend’s G4 w/same software– same exact FCP crash. Also, “ HHHMMMM!!! I’m with Jeremy on this one.
[dpray] “Also, this is the same system that has worked before with the same footage (and same varicam settings on all the tapes)”
The EXACT same tapes? one you have digitized in a prior session? then you know what you need to do.Bothered checkin the hours on the deck?

May 15, 2006 at 7:43 pm in reply to: If my product is only on DVD. What format should I shoot with HVX200[brianluce] “How about shooting dvcpro50? that’s the only mode that offers true 4.2.2 color. It’ll give a decent record time as well relatively speaking.”
Everyone else has made great comments on this but left out one very important fact.
on the P2 cards you get more record time on a card using the 720p24PN setting than you do working at DV50… and you are still working in a 4:2:2 color space

[Chris Poisson] “Quite bizzare to see graphics that moved side to side distort on the outside but not in the middle. After watching it for a while, my mind kinda got used to it and it looked normal. “
This is called FlexView.
it sounds as if yours was being done by the display– the new Terranex Mini has this feature and with out graphics it works very well to convert 4×3 content to 16×9

[doka15] “Is this a common problem that happens with this camera?”
No
this is most commonly operator error. If the clip will not playback in the camera the camera is not set to the smae format as the clip you are trying to playback. The record and playback setting must be the same for the camera to play the content back.I worked on location with 5 4 gig P2 cards and my laptop in italy, shooting about 4 hours of content a day over 10 days I lost only one frame of content- and it was my fault for pulling a card while it was recorded to. I captured nearly 600 gigs of data in that time – all recorded in the 24pN mode and lost one frame.

[Joe Murray] “It does not play from the card, I can only see the first frame. “
is the camera set to the same recording setup being shown in the lower left of the Thumbnail window?
if there is a red number viewable on the thumbnail file you do not have the camera set properly for playback of the clip. Change the recording set up so that the camera and thumbnail are at the same setting or it will not playback at all.

[Bob] “they hardly say a word about the ability to pull off a smooth rack focus zoom. So, here’s my question – are any of the new crop of HDV/P2 cams able to produce PROFESSIONAL quality shots, from a lens perspective?”
Bob
I have had no problems with the zoom/ focus controls on the HVX 200 when using a professional 3rd party controller from companies like VariZoom or Vocas. However I never use the camera handheld and I have always found all on camera controls awkward when working on sticks, they are not made to be used that way (when the camera is below shoulder level).

[chrispy] “Can the AJHD1200A playback a 720 tape and output as 1080 ?”
Yes — the deck can do cross conversion.
it can even take the 720p24 tape and out put as a true 1080 progressive image (instead of PSF)gary adcock

[Wes Greene] “Does the Varicam itself have firewire???”
No there is not a FW port on a Varicam.
you will need to get a 1200a deck at the very least to get the video off the tape.

Matching to a Varicam- the settings do not transfer directly camera to camera.
However it is far easier to set your Varicam to match the HVX that it is matching the other way. Know that it captures content is the same codec and compression, and working with the content between 2 cameras, when properly matched to each other, is quite easy.On best practices for your camera:
Since Friday is a slow night on the cow and there is some really good reading here. I want to remind everyone
there is a vast amount of info buried here in the COW Archives covering the multiple settings, setups and user articles on the HVX200. Doing a search in this forum will provide you a vast wealth of information regarding the camera setup and ideas for the workflow, and maybe even offer you some ideas that you may not have been thinking about.gary adcock
