[JT] “Where do I send the check?”

Buy your COW hosts a drink when you bump into them at the next show.

Note there is a P2 forum here on the COW that is dedicated to the P2 workflow and processes.

May 12, 2006 at 3:17 pm in reply to: P2 Footage Disorganized by FCP

[JT] “Alright, now to get to the problem. When Final Cut organizes by alphabet, these shots are completely and utterly out of order.”

Yeah that would be an FCP issue, have you tried sorting by Media Start?
If your camera op set the timecode on the camera this sorting method should get you in a general vicinity.

[JT] “Did the camera make truly random names that when sorted Alphabetically, they will be in no logical order, whatsoever? “

No it did- it is the nature of the P2/ MXF setup to randomly assign naming within the MXF format structure to the files so that a user in a large environment would be able to acquire something in the order of 20,000 clips without a conflict.

    AND
Before you complain remember that the P2 Tapeless workflow need to cover any number of different scenarios
and that large news-gathering solutions need this type of versatility.

  • [James Mulryan] “P2 material shot 720 24p”

That would make the footage 720p60 — Look at the footage ( cmd-9) to see what FCP says it is
then use the same setting for your easy set up and then Create a new sequence.

my guess is that you need to be using the DVCPROHD 720p60 setting if you shot 24p.

May 12, 2006 at 1:57 pm in reply to: Uncompressed capture from Varicam

[Wolf Austad] “Now, if this VITC reading problem is located to Final Cut Pro, would I be able to use f.ex. AJA VTR Exchange to capture and by that be able to use just one HD-SDI cable from the camera? Running an extra cable out of the camera for TC is a major PITA for onset work, so I would really like to avoid i”

Yes AJA VTR app will work as this issue is FCP not the Kona Board.
I never run the TC from the camera in a live capture situation, I generate timecode from a separate off camera source
and to all the devices as TC or as an audio track to DV cameras.

May 12, 2006 at 12:08 am in reply to: Cinema Tools, XML List, FCP capture problem…

[scott07] “What gives? Is it the XML file? Does FCP have some glitch when it comes to importing the XML file? Is it something with Log and Capture? If I have identical clips (one imported via XML, one re-logged with the same start and end TC), why does one work and the other not? “

    Welcome to FCP 5.1
on the additional frames make sure that you have the handles turned off when using batch capture in 5.1 for some reason I too have been getting this false frames to open all of the batch clips. (I however do not get then when working in an 24p HD offline opposed to an SD offline)

May 11, 2006 at 3:35 pm in reply to: Need advice. Keep G5 or buy a new quad 2.5G.????

[ED stevens] “Much to my disappointment at NAB, I find that most of the HD cards are PCIe and not PCix. Is it worth selling my Dual G5 2.5G”

AJA’s Kona 2 and LH cards are still very much in use for PCIX customers.

May 11, 2006 at 1:53 pm in reply to: Firestore Frame Rate Conversion Problem

[Don Wilson] “It appears that the Panasonic Frame Rate conversion software does not convert audio within FCP. So how the heck do you get the Firestore 720/60 data (the only way it records at this point) into an FCP 24 frame project with audio?”

    Don
that has not been my experience. IF the projects was truly shot at 24p (default) the FRC only removes the redundant frames of the 3:2 pulldown and still leaves the audio intact. Next try running the FRC and check all 3 of the boxes so you get a New QT file. name it and it should play correctly.

NO audio is included with any of the offspeed content that is converted using the FRC (because of the nature of variable speed footage the audio would be distorted – sped up or slowed down)

May 10, 2006 at 9:12 pm in reply to: HD Monitor Suggestions

[Dean Sensui] “Gary, that was a very informative session at NAB. I come from years of doing critical color correction work and color management for the print industry and want to make sure I can do work that’s on par in video production for my own company. “

Thanks for the vote of confidence Dean,
Making sure that everyone gets something out of the NAB sessions is often trying. I am lucky enough to have really great people that want to share their knowledge also.

    Please introduce yourself next time.

May 10, 2006 at 7:08 pm in reply to: 720p editing questions

[mikefilmguy] “1. We digitized on a G5 with FCP5 – we could see 4 audio tracks in FCP5 – in 4.5 the audio is one track – anyway to get these back as discrete tracks ?”

NO not in 4.5 Not unless you export the additional tracks out as AIFF.

[mikefilmguy] “2. is there anyway to get the comments info in the marker section to transfer with the subclip ?”

markers are part of the project file not the item.
