I have footage shot by HVX 200s. The footage was processed in FCP 5.1. But I needed to work for a week in FCP 5.0.4, so I took the files from capture scratch, and put them inside Final Cut 5.0.4. I then proceeded to organize the shots by dragging certain types to appropriately labeled bins. Then, all those that were left over filled a Various bin with around 370 shots.

Alright, now to get to the problem. When Final Cut organizes by alphabet, these shots are completely and utterly out of order. Say I shot three takes of something; one of those may be near the top of the bin, while the other two are scattered throughout, somewhere else. Did the camera make truly random names that when sorted Alphabetically, they will be in no logical order, whatsoever? And if not, why is this happening, and how do I fix it?

    Thanks!

Why not sort by media start? Would that help?

    All the best,

The two only choices I see is “By Name” and “By Duration.” (And, with how illogically organized it is, at this point, sorting by duration would at least provide a smidgeon of predictability.)

Is there something I’m missing, though?

[JT] “Alright, now to get to the problem. When Final Cut organizes by alphabet, these shots are completely and utterly out of order.”

Yeah that would be an FCP issue, have you tried sorting by Media Start?
If your camera op set the timecode on the camera this sorting method should get you in a general vicinity.

[JT] “Did the camera make truly random names that when sorted Alphabetically, they will be in no logical order, whatsoever? “

No it did- it is the nature of the P2/ MXF setup to randomly assign naming within the MXF format structure to the files so that a user in a large environment would be able to acquire something in the order of 20,000 clips without a conflict.

    AND
Before you complain remember that the P2 Tapeless workflow need to cover any number of different scenarios
and that large news-gathering solutions need this type of versatility.

you have your browser, or the bin set to show icons.
set it to display as a list, and things will get a lot easier.

control click on the *background* of the bin or browser to change the view settings.
Shift H will toggle through the settings, too.

i agree, it;s criminally stupid not to have a “sort by in-point” setting in icons mode.
    “duration”? what were they thinking?

Guys, that was the quickest, most lovely life-saver I’ve ever encountered on here. Where do I send the check? 😉 (and, as it often is, the best solution is mind-numbingly simple).

Hey, now that I can sort by media start, I will cease to curse the P2 file names. I understand the need for such a feature. It’s just that I’m new to the format, and have worked with far too much DV, and capturing tape footage. New organization, and I’m really happy to be leaving that hideous old format behind.

Buy your COW hosts a drink when you bump into them at the next show.

Note there is a P2 forum here on the COW that is dedicated to the P2 workflow and processes.

now to really earn that cheque!…

when in list view, you can sort by more than one column.
    in fact its desirable to…

first sort by reel, then hold SHIFT and sort by media start.

all your media is now sorted in to the order you shot it in.

you’ll find reel column used down the end.
don’t know why… it belongs at the front
    so drag it there.

    cheers,
    nick
