[Jeff Carpenter] “But just so you know, what IS allowed is to put 1 copy on 1 desktop AND on 1 laptop as long as both machines do not run Final Cut at the SAME time. So you’re allowed to work at home and then go and work on the road with only one copy.”
Jeff,
I’m curious where you found that exeption to the Apple license agreement. Here’s what the Apple Store website says:Permitted License Uses and Restrictions. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This includes the right to transfer your copy of the Apple Software licensed hereunder from an Apple G4 hardware platform to an Apple G5 hardware platform.
So, unless you have other information I don’t think you are allowed to do that. Please please please prove me wrong!

[Anders Haavie] “trange, we had this problem on both dsr-11 and dsr-45 models.. and I guess we tried at least 10 different ones. Maybe there were something wrong with the tapes”
We’ve used 184s on both DSR-11 and DSR-30 decks with no problems, when we have to. It’s a long way to shuttle though, and making dvd or vhs window dubs is a p.i.t.a.

February 11, 2007 at 2:41 pm in reply to: Quicktime Timecode viewing on Windows PC questionDan,
You might want to try CatDV’s archive function (if the standard edition has that, I think it does but I use the professional edition). With an archive your client will get a catalog that you’ve created and the associated preview files already linked and attached. I had a problem (one time) properly linking preview movies when moving to a different computer. With the archive you’ll be sure your client is reading the proper files and seeing the proper timecode.Regards,

Sounds like it was recorded in PAL. The Z1 will record standard def in either NTSC or PAL depending on if it’s set to 50 or 60 cycles. (the setting is at the very end of the “other” menu.)
Final Cut does not differentiate between DV and DVCam, the codec, as you pointed out, is the same.

Make sure you have Firewire set as the Playback mode in Audio/Video settings. Also check: View>External Video is set to “All Frames”.

[Bob Zelin] “(Plenty of people are still on AVID systems with MAC G4’s and Meridian card sets, and still make money). “
Amen to that, Bob. Heck our second station is a PPC 9500 running an old Media 100 and a Effeto/Pronto compositing board! I wish all of my investments could make money for as long as that old workhorse.

I think it really depends on if you’ll end up putting all seven hours on your computer anyway. If you are going to, then why put another seven hours of use on your deck or camera’s heads? It would also depend on how fast your computer is. On my dual 2.7 G5 I don’t need to render DV footage with the TC Reader filter. In scenerios like yours I simply play the timeline out to a DVD burner via analog video. That way I haven’t made an additional playback pass on the camera masters and I haven’t put additional wear and tear on my deck.
