The difference in terminology between these programs can make finding even the simplest things time consuming.

It’s called a Slug in Final Cut and is one of the video “generators” the program can create. See Chapter 21 page 491 in your manual (FCP 5) for information on the various generators and how to create and use them. If your manual is different, search for “slug” or “generator”.

    Jon,

You’ll find a wealth of posts concerning your questions by using the Cow’s search page. I just tried a search for, simply, HDV. Check the “both” box to search posts and articles as there are some good articles on these topics on the Cow. I set the time frame to “all available posts” and got hundreds of hits.

[Bob Zelin] “DO NOT put the Firmtek (or the Sonnet) in the PCI-X slot – they MUST be in slot 2 or 3, and the Kona 2 must be in Slot 4. The SATA cards are not ATTO UL4D’s.”

    Hi Bob,

Could you tell us what problems there are in putting the SATA card in slot 4? I have a Tempo-X 4+4 card in slot 4 and a Kona LH in slot 3 in a dual 2.7 G5…. seems to be working fine but I’m one with only “a little knowledge” which of course is a dangerous thing. Your input would be very welcome.

    Thanks and Regards,
    David

  • Sorry to hear that Sean. Their fix, as described above, seems to be working fine including being able to sleep the system using the Sleep command.

I’m using Hitachi SATA-II drives (although I haven’t put them into a pc yet to run the dos program that allows you to set them to SATA-II mode.) I chose the Sonnet card because of it’s 8 ports and plan to add the Firmtek four drive Hot Swappable box in the future. They seem to make top notch stuff so I’m sure you’re right about their controller cards. Thanks for the advice!

I just built an internal raid using the Swift Data 200 drive bracket kit and four Hitachi 250gig eSATA drives. The bracket kit went in easily and is nicely designed. The Hitachi drives are very quiet and I haven’t noticed the G5 fans operating any faster or more frequently than before. I’m using Hardware Monitor to watch temperatures, load and fan rpm and so far I haven’t noticed any stress on the G5 at all. BareFeats has a review here:
    https://www.barefeats.com/swift.html

I went with Sonnet’s new Tempo-X eSATA 4+4 controller, and eventually plan on a four bay removable drive box so I’ll then have four internal and four external drives available. The Firmtek box looks better to me than others I’ve studied and it’s smaller too. There’s a BareFeats review of it here:

That should get your default output to SD.”

Thank you for mentioning that Walter, even though his problem turned out to be a faulty connector. Once you are used to the Kona system, the above is pretty obvious, but I installed an LH last week and was having just this issue. I couldn’t understand why the control panel reverted to 720P every time it took control of the card when set to Macintosh Desktop. In retrospect it seems obvious that a computer desktop would be progressive scan, and that the signal would have to be converted to play on an NTSC monitor, but I wasn’t “getting it” at the time.

The worst part for me was that even though AJA had been great about quickly answering pre-sale tech support questions, I called and left voice-mail for the tech support guys explaining my problem and have never received a call back. I figured it out myself, but geez, after reading so much about the wonderful support AJA gives I must say I’m disappointed. I know it must have seemed like a “dumb question” once you “get it”, but there should be no such thing as a question you don’t answer in a tech support operation.
