Maybe I am missing something (probably am), but, I have some tapes from a client that are in DVCAM but on a MiniDV tape. I pop them into our Z1 and it says DVCAM in the display, but FCP reports that ‘there was an error on the tape’ when I try and capture in DVC of any form. I can capture no problem in DV-PAL mode.

Is this normal/correct? I believe that there is no difference in dv and dvcam (both 5:1 compression, but a higher tape speed I believe)… so I guess its fine, but I just want to check.

Sounds like it was recorded in PAL. The Z1 will record standard def in either NTSC or PAL depending on if it’s set to 50 or 60 cycles. (the setting is at the very end of the “other” menu.)

Final Cut does not differentiate between DV and DVCam, the codec, as you pointed out, is the same.
