You could capture whole tapes into FCP, but use a multi platform logging program to do the note taking. Come to think of it, using xml you might be able to get away with one license for a pc copy.

Matt,
It would be good to provide more information so that someone could help you. You don’t have any information filled out in your profile and nobody knows what kind of equipment or what software versions you’re using. I’d suggest making a list of what you have, and a list of exactly what you are doing and with what settings. Are you ever seeing video from the camera?

To answer your question, yes, there are lots of cases you can buy empty, with various interfaces (Firewire 400, 800, USB…..) for 2 1/2″ drives. You can pick up a USB or fw400 case for under $50. There are also adaptors out there for just pluging in a drive without a case for just the purpose you want. BUT……
You might want to try and get the G3 running, it’s a great old machine. Take a look at this thread, where I got lots of suggestions for firing up a non starting Pismo. It now runs just fine.

David,
While I’m sure there are folks here who know (I’m not one of them) there is also a Panasonic P2 forum here on the cow. You might want to read and search posts in there for some answers and post there if you don’t find what you need.

[Aaron D Hose] “Now…what about converting to DV what I already have captured on HDV…how to set that up in Compressor… “
How much footage are you talking about? Maybe it would be easier and faster to recapture it with the Z1 doing the conversion.

I think they certainly got a lot of bang for their 5k. Nice job. Your DP did a very nice job too.

David is absolutely correct, and unfortunately your shooter may also be. If he had the silver gain position switch set to L(ow), but had either the “auto lock” slider set to lock or hold, OR had the plastic “Gain” button in the auto position, he did not have control of the gain setting.
With the Z1 you should be able to see all of the settings in the viewfinder when display is set to on. (focus, gain, white balance and shutter speed). If you don’t, then that setting is in auto and will compensate for your other settings. ie. you could be stopping down the iris and the camera might start pumping in gain to compensate….. and does so without letting you know. If he saw “0” as the gain setting in the viewfinder, than he was indeed in manual and had 0 gain.
The Z1 has one of the quietist electronic gain circuits I’ve ever seen. It would have to be really really high to get pictures that are “barely usable” and unless he was changing the lighting or exposure settings there doesn’t seem to be a good reason why it should change between clips.
Maybe you could post some still frames of his “good” and “barely usable” footage. If we could see the artifacts you’re talking about it might help someone figure out what’s going on.

February 21, 2007 at 5:09 pm in reply to: Using HDV with FCP5 – Sony HVR-1VU camera capture[Dream Big Give Big] “I shot it on the DVCam, 1080i setting for HDV quaility stuff, but cannot figure out how to capture it in that. I can capture what I shot in NTSC DV, which is way lower quality. “
Which setting did you record with? DVCam, OR HDV 1080i? If you did shoot it as DVCam then that would explain why you can catpure it as DV, but not as 1080i.

Thanks for granting my wish Paul! Interesting that they should have two different license versions posted for the same product.
https://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/finalcutpro.htm
I checked the printed version that came with my Studio package and it also says the software can only be installed on one computer at a time. However, the license that loads with the installer for my 5.1 crossgrade says the same thing as the one you quoted. I’m goin’ with that one! Maybe that will teach me not to glaze over when the license page appears.
Thanks,
David
