Powerbook hard drives
Is there an easy way to salvage data from a powerbook hard drive? I have a Lombard Powerbook G3. Finally bit the dust, and I need to get data off the disk. Short of bringing it into an Apple store and paying them to do it for me, is there an easier way? Are there external shells you can plug an internal powerbook hard drive into, for example?

It depends of if the Hard Drive it self has a problem. Take it to some one who knows what they are doing.

depends on what “bit the dust” means. if there are bad sectors, booting it up in a firewire case might work, but if it is a hardware failure you would have to pay big bucks to get files retrieved.

I should have been clearer. It’s not the hard drive. It was fun up until the computer stopped booting up.

if its not booting up, it still could be the hard drive, you didn’t say why its not booting up

I meant to say “fine”.
Spilled some water on the table next to it. Some got on the keyboard. I pulled it away from the table, and dried the keys. Seemed okay, and then on restart…it konked out.

To answer your question, yes, there are lots of cases you can buy empty, with various interfaces (Firewire 400, 800, USB…..) for 2 1/2″ drives. You can pick up a USB or fw400 case for under $50. There are also adaptors out there for just pluging in a drive without a case for just the purpose you want. BUT……
You might want to try and get the G3 running, it’s a great old machine. Take a look at this thread, where I got lots of suggestions for firing up a non starting Pismo. It now runs just fine.
