I put a 7200 rpm Hitachi in a black MacBook, and can capture through FCP to the internal and a USB bus powered drive.
Everything but native formats.

The Panasonic shoots DVCProHD, and the Canon uses mpeg2 compression.
HVX HD data rate is 100 mbps and the Canon is about 3.6 MB/s.

Are you asking whether you can capture now in Final Cut Pro on the MBP to an external drive?
You can for all but pNative formats.
You don’t need a battery powered drive, just a bus powered drive.
