I have noticed that brand new versions of FCP have somthing that my six month old version (5.1.2 Academic) dosent, a really nice Import Panasonic P2 Window that allows for elegant ingestion of P2 cards. I was stunned when I plugged my P2 Store into my friends Macbook Pro and after selecting -Import P2- an awesome preview/logging/ingestion queing window appeared! Will I have tp purchase a new copy of FC Studio in order to enjoy this, or is it available as a downloadable update? If so, where is it located? Finally, can I download it seeing as I have an academic version of FC Studio? Thanks in advance for your guidence!

    Yours truly,

This was implemented with the release of FCP 5.1.2.

As to awesome dude, it more functional and modal, which I think are better descriptions.

    5.1.2 is a free download

If you’ve already got the Academic version of FCP 5.1.2 and that feature isn’t available, then there’s nothing more for you to get since 5.1.2 is the latest regular release as well.

There normally are certain features that aren’t available on Academic versions. Many Academic versions also add watermarks to avoid commercial distribution of products created with them. The Academic releases aren’t generally for commercial use – they’re so you can learn to use the product. Since it appears you’re working with a company (TreehouseHD) you might want to double check your license.

there is no limitation on using the academic version commercially

no is there a watermark or other limitation

however, you cannot upgrade beyond dot increases, and you have to qualify as an student in order to buy an academic version

if you have 5.1.2, then it has the same functionality as the retail version

    Matt – Dude,

I had pointed you to the Apple 5.1.2 upgrade…..
If you installed correctly and are not
seeing the new improved P2 import than
I guess the Academic version is “holding you back”.
Get in the game and buy a real copy of Final Cut Studio –
especially if you are making videos for sale.

If the 5.1.2 Academic version truly has the same functionality as the retail version, then his P2 import feature would be the same, since he already has that version installed. Either there is a difference or he’s mistaken about what he’s got.

    I understand that.

That’s why I am wondering if he updated to 5.1.2.

Apple doesn’t maintain different versions of any of its proapps.

    Matt,

I too have an Academic version of FCP, 5.1.2. It DOES have the new P2 import window you’re referring to. Check to make sure you actually have “.2” version; if so and you still can’t get the “new” P2 import window when selecting IMPORT/Panasonic P2 then you might have some software corruption somewhere depending on the age onf your OSX install. In which case you might want to try the following:

    A) Trash your preferences and delete all your cache files then restart FCP and see if it comes up. If not…
    B) Run Software Update and make sure you have the latest versions of all Apple core software (QT, Java, Pro Apps Support etc) and the FCP suite.
    C) Do some low level disc maintenance: Use Disk Utility and repair permissions, Verify disk
    D) If you have them run TechTool Pro 4 and or DiskWarrior and see if you have any file, folder or directory issues that need fixing.

If none of that works and you still can’t get things working properly then I’d suggest backing up all your important data (email, web-favs etc) and wipe your drive and reinstall the OS and apps.

And as mentioned before, the Academic version DOES NOT induce any limitations of any sort nor does it put watermarks on anything. The only difference is pricing and the inability to upgrade to newer full versions.
