Inserting P2 cards into a new MacBook Pro
Posted by Robb Stan on December 27, 2006 at 12:26 pmAre there any adapters available for the new MacBook Pro that allow you to insert P2 cards into the new smaller card slot? If so, are there any that work better than others? Are there any disadvantages to using an adapter?

December 27, 2006 at 6:22 pmPanasonic’s solution (at the current moment) is to either get a P2 store or the 5 slot p2 card reader, both of which are very expensive.

I don’t know who to point the finger of blame at, Panasonic or Apple? They both seemed to have dropped the ball on this one.

December 27, 2006 at 6:57 pmIt is Panasonic’s equipment. Apple isn’t to blame for they write OS software, a few applications and make computers. It would be very nice if Panasonic would make a SINGLE card reader that connected via USB 2.0 (to be off the same bus as the firewire drive you archive to) that would be relatively cheap. This would allow users to connect the device to a TOWER or iMac as well.

Shane,
I am extremely happy with the P2 workflow, the HVX200, and Final Cut Pro. However, before purchasing my 200 I did attend a 4 hour seminar in Miami sponsored by MidTown Video and co-hosted by Panasonic and Apple. One of the things I kept hearing was how closely they were working with each other.
I guess if I did put the blame on anyone it would have to be me for wanting a faster laptop and not being happy with my old G4.

December 27, 2006 at 7:25 pmYes, but Apple doesn’t make ANY devices that connect with other people’s equipment. They make computers and software only. There is no Mac Adapter for anything…it is all up to third party vendors.

December 27, 2006 at 11:52 pmThere’s no one to blame. Panasonic developed P2 with the PCMCIA standard which is a technology that is developed independently of Apple or Panasonic. Panasonic (I’m sure) chose to use the PCMCIA standard for now as that is the standard that is installed in most existing laptops in the user base today. 4 years from now, expresscard will be more widely installed in the current computer user base, and perhaps Panasonic will move on to P2Express or something. For now, we adapt. Hopefully, that duel systems adaptor will be just the thing we need, unless you want to buy the Panasonic p2 card reader on the p2 store. I just got a new MacBook Pro and not being able to view a P2 card one at a time is frustrating for sure. Luckily, I have a P2 store and use that constantly. I am not going to buy the 5 card reader and will wait patiently until this duel systems thing pans out. If not, it’s P2 store all the way.

Better re-open that case. That Delkin adapter doesn’t do what you want. That’s not a PCMCIA adapter, that’s a CompactFlash adapter. In other words, it won’t work to do what you’re trying to do.
