Recording 1080i to MacBook Pro with external storage
Posted by Mrvideo on December 21, 2006 at 3:56 pmThat is about the question. Can I use a MacBook Pro with a battery powered external drive to capture 1080i from an HVX-200 via Firewire? In other words, instead of using the Firestore and transfering it to the MacBook?

December 21, 2006 at 4:46 pmAre you asking whether you can capture now in Final Cut Pro on the MBP to an external drive?
You can for all but pNative formats.
You don’t need a battery powered drive, just a bus powered drive.

Thank you David
I was wonering if anyone around this forum has had the experience with an HVX-200 and a MacBook Pro to capture a long form show. I am also aware that you can go into Quicktime Pro and start Recording what is coming in over firewire. Just don’t know if that utilizes timecode as well.
And about the comment “for all but pNative formats”. Are you saying there is an issue capturing 1080p, 720p in 60 and 24 frames?

December 21, 2006 at 7:46 pmHow long do you want to capture for?
You can still capture 24pN through FCP, but your camera has to be set to 720p24 over 60.

December 21, 2006 at 11:30 pmHi,
My title says what I really needed but the question morphed into not being able to do any (x)p formats. I simply want to be able to record for up to two hours with HVCPRO HD and record it to a MBP with sufficient storage space, since 1080 is the most content to be captured frame size,

December 22, 2006 at 12:48 amOn thing you may want to watch out for is that a lot of bus powered drives are only 5400rpm which may not be sufficient for sustained 1080 data transfer for long periods. Obviously if you are asking about bus powered or battery powered drives then you will not have acces to AC, so you will be running the MBP of it’s battery as well. If using a bus powered 7200 rpm drive you will definitely burn through the battery power on the mac a lot quicker than normal as well. TEST TEST TEST.

December 23, 2006 at 5:19 pmYou cannot use the QT Pro player to record from firewire live from the HVX200.
You need Final Cut Pro.
