Actually Vegas is way easier to use in my opinion that FCP, Media composer, Adobe Premeire ect. With your experience, and checking out the tutorials, see the link at the top of the sony Vegas Forum, and reading the help file, you could be up and running pretty quick. You could get hands on training with people not in Portland using “Log me in” or another remote desktop program, where I or someone else can see and control your screen and talk you through some of the basics on the phone at the same time. Vegas is alot easier that you may think. If you can’t find local help, I would spend an hour or so a night for a few nights with log me in if you need.

January 7, 2011 at 1:28 am in reply to: Is there any way to get good YouTube quality without rendering in HD?John, maybe you can help me here too. When I upload a 1080p video to youtube, it takes much longer for the youtube player buffer to fill than other peoples 1080p videos. Any idea how I can get the same results as them? As always, thanks. Hmm, I see what you mean. I did something very similar to this on a green screen video contest from CMT that I won. I placed several instances of myself behind and in front of the singer and had to pan across a background. I ran into problems like you where they didn’t quite match up, so I used things in the background pic to line the me’s up with so it looked real. My pan was linear so I only needed two keyframes per track to do it. I used the door and windows in the background pic as references and made sure I was in front of a window for example, at the beginning and the end of the pan. I just had to tweek the second keyframe a little to get it to work. Look at this video and part way through, you’ll see where I have four of me with the country star walking between us (me). I just made sure it looked lilke I was standing in the same place in reference to the lighthouse (background).

Maybe you could render the zoomed in layer and replace it with the rendered file so there are no keyframes. Then you can copy attributes from one track to another to copy the keyframes, and since there are no keyframes to start with, it shouldn’t mess with the placement as you decribed.
I was at different distances from the camera for each track of me so that wouldn’t have worked in my case. Maybe it will in yours, Hope this helps, Danny Hays -
I knew I had it working before. glad you figured it out. Danny Hays

I’ve used that upconverting feature before, but with 16 x 9 SD video. I just tried with 4 x 3 and your right. With 16 x 9 letterbox checked, it chops off the top and bottom, with anamorphic checked, it streches the video to 16 x 9. I’ve personaly done away with all my SD cameras so I’m not effected by this. I use Sony Vegas mostly for my NLE and it gives me the option to take the streched to 16 x 9 clips and change the aspect ratio to get the pillar box results your looking for. It’s not a fix for BM lack of a setting for this but it’s a work around that works. Hope this helps,

January 6, 2011 at 11:38 pm in reply to: Newbie ? of how to get a Photo behind a Shrunken Video?try putting the JPEG on a track below the video track in the timeline. tracks on top in the timeline will show up on top in the playback and rendered video.

You are putting linear time code on the tape all the way through by capturing from beginning to the end of the tape without stopping with each NEW tape before using them for a project right? At least with my old Canon GL1, if I didn’t do that first, time code would start over everytime I started capturing on that tape.
