oh my god. so THAT was the problem. I thought i was going crazy. I experienced your exact problem. fcp 5 G5 xserve panny 1200 varicam footage brought in 720p 8 bit uncmprssd. ALL the clips were black but the media was on the drive. My frantic workaround was to import the clips from the drive, but i was really puzzled by the problem. Thought it was some goofed up settings. Thanks for the clue Walter.

August 4, 2005 at 8:10 pm in reply to: Xserve Raid & FCP

I’ve been running a 2.5Tbyte xserve raid for 1 yr. It’s stripped as one big volume so i can do uncompressed HD. I bought the apple care protection plan and i’m glad i did. I had a drive go bad and they replaced it overnight. The cool part was that even though it’s one big drive I didn’t lose any info. I have had occasional drop frame error messages on playback, but I’ve never been able to isolate it to the xserve and they are so infrequent, they’re not a serious issue. It was a spendy decision, but I’m glad I’ve got it.

the video card makes a big difference. There is a site that quantifies the difference between cards running motion. I can’t recall the address but a goggle search would probably find it.

live type has more interactive control over the “live” aspect of the type. I ran into this last week trying to do a live type effect in MOTION2. After struggling with it for 30 minutes, I exported the background and opened LIVE TYPE and accomplished what i wanted in under 2 minutes.

the difference between tv down and tv up is whether the stanchions are above the tv or below it. NOT direction of movement. My workaround was to use the livetype application. The controls make much more sense in livetype and respond the way you’d expect them to.

June 4, 2005 at 2:02 am in reply to: Midi Keyboard & Motion 2

M-audio 49e works with motion 2. There is a behavior called midi, you apply it to an object, then in the learning mode of the behavior you hit a key and that key is assigned to that behavior. Then you have the option to do a bunch of different modifiers. So it’s one key per midi behavior. I set-up the lower c note to move right on the x axis and the volume fader to move on the y axis. and the b note to move left on the x axis. This needed 3 instances of the midi behavior but was easier to do than to type this out.

no the clips are black in fcp but if i open them from the finder with qt they are fine. ANd if i import the clips into the bin they are fine. I have 4.5 and 10.3.9 on a ext drive and if i reboot from there it captures correctly so it seems to be a fcp5/tiger issue.
