As HD-SDI capturing is still broken with FCP 5.0.2 I was wondering how this is affecting your workflow and what folks are doing as a work-around. I’m quite surprised Apple hasn’t addressed this issue with the first revision of FCP 5, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by anything these days.

For those who don’t use it, if you capture via HD-SDI, FCP will not connect correctly to the clip after it is captured. You’ll get what looks like a Subclip in the Bin and there will be no video. There are two workarounds that I know of.

One – Remove Subclip Limits. This works ok, but still leaves about 20 seconds of bogus black at the end of each clip and the clips seem to go “offline” a lot when a project is relaunched.

Two – Import the clips back into the project from the harddrive and delete all the subclips.

This whole issue started with FCP 5.0 and has continued through to 5.0.2. At this point it’s really starting to become a major drag on the workflow here whenever we do HD-SDI captures. What are you doing as a workaround for this? Is this becoming a bit of a headache to you too?

    Walter,

While much of my work in still done in SD, I have completed two or three projects in HD using FCP 5. I have captured all the material using the K2 HD-SDI. I have not seen the issues that you are referring to. However this makes me nervous as I am getting ready to start another HD project. Does this only effect sub clips or is it just any capture?

    Thanks,

All captures on both of my systems via HD-SDI and on a client’s system using HD-SDI. It all worked fine in FCP 4 / 4.5, but once we upgraded to 5.0, the issue started. I’ve been told by multiple sources that this is an Apple issue.

SD-SDI works perfectly, it only affects HD-SDI.

Walter..I have to agree with Jared… I myself just having finished an HD Feature have not seen this problem…I am using FCP5 and Kona 2 capturing offline DVCPRO100 via HD SDI and then Onlining at 10 Bit via HD SDI…everything went as smooth as silk. Are you using the new 1.4 driver for Kona??

Yep, been using it with one of our systems and still running the older driver on the other system. I’ve heard from several folks with this issue as well.

No problems capturing HD-SDI – FCP 5 – Decklink HD – Xraid. Have you tried a clean install?

This past weekend, I did a 1080psf24 online into FCP 5.02 via Kona 2 and didn’t have any of the problems mentioned. I’m not at all saying the problem doesn’t exist, but just that in that particular case it didn’t happen to me, in case that helps. Regardless, AJA needs to look into the matter.

It’s good to know that some of you are having success with HD-SDI captures. Let me ask, it looks like all of you are doing 1080i uncompressed. Any of you doing 720p uncompressed 8bit or 10bit? That’s what we’re doing both here and at my client’s location. On all three systems, we get the problem.

    Walter,

Ar ethe offlines coming from your own macine or the same machine or are these projects that are coming from other offline systems back to your place for recapture.

If the ladder is teh case then I think that it has something to do with the project file moving from machine to machine. It seems that when you stay on one system(like the other guys who posted) the problem does not exist.

So I would just double chek how that offline file is getting to you. Try edls, xmls and media managed projects too.

    Hi Walter –
You are scaring the crap out of me, since I know your feedback is reliable. I have multiple installs out there, with almost identical gear to what you own – G5, OS-X 10.4.2, FCP 5.0.2, Kona 2, and Panasonic AJ-HD1200A, being used at DVCProHD resolution, and using the HD-SDI path with RS422 VTR control – not HD via Firewire capture. I have not seen or heard any of my clients express the issues that you are having. This still makes me nervous, as you know what you are doing.

I think that it might be appropriate for AJA to make a public comment on this forum about any possible known issues relating to Walters observation.

And I agree with other users here Walter – I know it seems crazy, since everything else is working, but a clean install (which I know takes hours, and is a pain in the ass) might be a good idea.

    Hey Walter,

FWIW we have posted about 12 productions using HD-SDI since migrating to FCP 5/FCP 5.2 and Kona2 and have not had any of THESE problems. However we are doing everything in 1080i, and using Xserve Raids.

Are you taking 1080i material and trying to capture it at 720p? If so, I can try to test this workflow next
week and let you know what happens. Since we don’t have any 720p material, I can’t offer to test that for
    you.

It concerns me that you are having these problems, as I have always considered you the HD Kona guru! I
know that this is not just a RTFM issue that you are having, so I hope we can help you solve it.

    Best,
    eda
