September 25, 2005 at 2:17 am[David Battistella] “Ar ethe offlines coming from your own macine or the same machine or are these projects that are coming from other offline systems back to your place for recapture.
If the ladder is teh case then I think that it has something to do with the project file moving from machine to machine. It seems that when you stay on one system(like the other guys who posted) the problem does not exist.
So I would just double chek how that offline file is getting to you. Try edls, xmls and media managed projects too.”
No offlining used here, all online quality and all original captures.

Will be doing that on both of my systems in a few weeks after we finish our latest round of episodes. My client’s system is brand spankin new and we’re seeing the issue there too with 720p HD SDI captures.

September 25, 2005 at 2:22 am[eda] “Are you taking 1080i material and trying to capture it at 720p? If so, I can try to test this workflow next
week and let you know what happens. Since we don’t have any 720p material, I can’t offer to test that for
you.”Thanks, but no, it’s all 720p material shot on the Varicam and capturing at 720p. My deck is out on rental for a few days so when I get it back, I’m going to try some 1080i captures for the heck of it and see if that captures right.
[eda] “It concerns me that you are having these problems, as I have always considered you the HD Kona guru! I
know that this is not just a RTFM issue that you are having, so I hope we can help you solve it.”I appreciate that, but I get as much good information from these forums and I hope I give to you all. I’m fortunate to have been able to learn a lot over these past four years with Final Cut Pro to hopefully have a little bit of knowledge to share.
I’m just really curious to try some 1080i captures when I get my deck back on Tuesday evening. I’ve not done any 1080i captures with FCP 5 yet.

September 25, 2005 at 2:38 amOk, one off the wall thought here –
We recently had to bring in some HDV footage via a Miranda bridge after getting a new firmware
upgrade from them. It wouldn’t work (broken time code message) until we got the offset set correctly.
Now it will capture 80% of the time. We turned the “warn on timecode breaks” to “warn after” and it captured
everything correctly. (Even the 20% that it says have timecode breaks)Maybe try playing with the offset in the machine controll settngs?
Like I say, off the wall thought.

Good thought there, but machine control is definitely not the issue here. Machine control is perfect whether I use Firewire or RS-422 for control.
The clips are being captured perfectly to the harddrive. But they are not being referenced correctly into the Final Cut Pro project. Very very strange and as I said, I can’t wait to get my deck back so I can try some 1080i captures.

September 25, 2005 at 4:12 amoh my god. so THAT was the problem. I thought i was going crazy. I experienced your exact problem. fcp 5 G5 xserve panny 1200 varicam footage brought in 720p 8 bit uncmprssd. ALL the clips were black but the media was on the drive. My frantic workaround was to import the clips from the drive, but i was really puzzled by the problem. Thought it was some goofed up settings. Thanks for the clue Walter.

Interesting there, 720p material just like mine. So it’s looking more and more like it’s just limited to 720p uncompressed and not 1080i. This is very weird and I’ll be so happy to get my 1200A back on Tuesday so I can run some further tests.

Are you on 10.4.2 / FCP5.02 / QT7.02?
this was reported to apple as a 7.0 and now a 7.02 bug.it was fixed in the 7.01 version and rebroke in 7.02

I’ll check when I get into the office. It’s probable that everything is running 7.0.2. Brilliant that Apple would fix this in an update and then break it in the next update.

I don’t have my deck back yet, but AJA just confirmed that this is a 720p issue only. If you’re capturing at 1080i, this HD-SDI issue does not affect you.
